Say it ain't so. I thought you lived within a short ride of the Davenport Cash Store, or a longer one of Santa Cruz - or all the Half Moon Bay bakeries? Have I got my distances wrong? Or, worse, my future residence plans? No Pie? I'm worried

Oh yeah, I remember reading your post about winning the bike. My wife said she liked it as soon as she got in the saddle of it. I told her, if you like it; it must be a good fit. Thanks for the good wishes!

I did the Bob Galloway Memorial Amish Country Ride in Arthur, IL, with an old friend. I had intended to earn my pie by doing the 60-mile route, but he's been having some health and mobility issues, so I stayed alongside him to help encourage him through the 20-mile loop. We had already registered for the official post-ride Mennonite meal of chicken and noodles, green beans and bread and butter, plus a variety of desserts, among which was this piece of apple pie, consumed by yours truly:

They also had this stuff they called "Amish butter" to put on the bread - a mix of peanut butter, honey and marshmallow fluff:

Then we spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out in Champaign, where we finished the day with my own favorite "pie" from Papa Del's:

CraigB,
The Amish know their food, don't they? When we walked into the Amish Market we visited, I was overwhelmed by all the smells of food and wished I had some way to carry home some of the other goodies they were offering. I have promised myself a trip back with the backseat of my Yaris in the down position and void of my bike!

They do for sure. Unfortunately, that kind of comfort food without the accompanying laborious lifestyle would be deadly for me. I'll have to settle for a return to ride again next year, and see if my old friend's health has improved enough for us to range farther afield. It was a fun ride, if flat as the proverbial pancake. Lots of horse-drawn buggies to watch out for, and their attendant road "debris," and many, many smiling faces and friendly greetings. The route also took a scenic little turn through Chesterville, IL, where we found an old, old cemetery along the banks of the Kaskaskia River, with the grave of a reputed "Chesterville Witch" in the form of a huge old oak tree with a wrought-iron fence around it. Legend says if the tree is ever cut down, or if it ever dies, she'll come back to haunt the Amish men of the area:

I rode but no pie. My wife's 90 year old mom called at 2am Saturday morning telling my wife she had fallen and cut her scalp. My wife headed over and took her to ER to get it stapled shut. She didn't get her mom home and in bed till 5am so wasn't too keen on the idea of riding. And as my wife was the one who did the research on the pie spots, I didn't feel right going without her. Did manage a nice 20 mile ride while she napped. Hopefully we'll do a makeup ride soon.

Sure didn't. There were a lot of people, and our pace was slow enough that we never did "synch" with any other riders.

Fully intended to take the camera and get pie but woke up feeling a little sick, so I ended up doing a 40ish mile club ride which was too fast to enjoy it all.
There was one stop at a market so I had a cinnamon and caramel muffin that was made of flaky dough and baked to perfection.

I don't do pie rides. I'm just not into sweets. I do beer rides. Now there's something worth riding for. Sometimes I throw in pizza with the beer. Hey, a pizza is a "pie", isn't it?

No photos of the bikes, as there was no outdoor seating. I'm not sure about this as I didn't test them, but I believe the Amish may be a bit fussy about allowing bikes (and buggies) in their markets. Just a hunch.

I heard an interesting quote on a tv show today:

"Don't wait for someone special to show up, spend your time getting yourself ready for when they do."

I believe time spent cycling is good way to prepare one's self both physically and mentally.

Will have to do a belated pie ride today due to our son getting home with a new bicycle late Friday and all his commitments with friends over the weekend. Monica and I will hit the road after I get a crane relocated today from one site to another.

I appreciate your positive approach. I'm certainly in the game, if that's all it takes. I spend 'mucho tiempo' cycling, riding for hours at a time for the sheer joy of it.

As it turns out, there are but a handful of earnest riders in my immediate locale. But these are hardcore Rulesmen... they don't ride for fun, as they are The Cyclists. These are the skinny, white-collar guys motorists complain about.
In their esteem, pie is for *******. HTFU.

A town or two over, there is a small group of fun riders. There is hope among their number. But from my experience with them, they mostly just toodle along the MUP in the afternoon and yuk it up. Pie is definitely in their minds, but really riding with a purpose? Well, not so much.

In the end, I'll have to compromise if I'm to find social cycling among these two groups. If there is a third group of fellow enthusiasts, somewhere between slow casual and hardcore, I haven't found them. The search goes on.

My pie ride last year featured a pizza. And see the pic at the end of post 29 for the second of my "pies" following this year's ride.

Friday night I was up sick most of the night.

Saturday, I couldn't and didn't hardly move, which is MOST unusual for me. Sat in the chair all day.

Sunday was a bit better - got a walk in for a couple of miles.

So, I had my "pie ride" today.

33 miles withi a 40 minute swim in the middle.

Here is the odometer:

Here is the BLUEBERRY pie and ice cream!!

Pie Ride on the Columbia Trail, NJ

My pie ride was to scout the Columbia Trail from High Bridge to Long Valley, NJ to see if it was still OK after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. My round trip was 23 miles and I had lunch at the Long Valley Pub and Brewery which included some cheese pie (OK it was cheese cake on the menu but the closest thing they had to pie). This photo is part of a web site documenting Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee damage observed on my rides the past few weeks. (Plus a ride in Wisconsin!)

So, I forgot about pie on Saturday, but I did ride 36 miles. On Sunday, I rode 50.9 miles with one flat on the rear, then went out for dinner with the wife, except the restaurant had no pie. We then went to the store and purchased a blueberry pie and some Vanilla Bean ice cream and enjoyed desert at home. The pie was actually pretty good, but doesn't compare to a bakery in the town 14 miles away, which is where I'll ride next time.

This is my first road bike (and pie ride); it has a steel frame with 105 components and so far, the bike has been great. I've put 1453 miles on it since May 28th.

Which is what I probably need to do - just go get some pie. Even if I'm doing it solo - well, it's PIE!
