New Frame Almost Here!
Can you tell I'm excited?
Anyway...I'm going to DIY build this one and thought I'd ask some preliminary questions.
I have wheels I am happy with and a complete 105 Shimano group that has relatively low mileage on it. Eventually I'd like to go full Ultegra, but I might try the 105 swap first just to get my feet wet and not to 'throw away' a perfectly good groupo.
So my first two questions of what will probably lead to a long list are these...
1) is there any downside to starting off with just moving over my existing 105 group to the new frame? i'm operating under the assumption that I can then switch to Ultegra down the road with no harm done??
2) i do need a headset and my starting point is this, https://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/item/KINJFR3K. however, i have a feeling it's overkill for my group. are there a few good runner-ups that give me 80% of the quality with 20% of the cost (ok, maybe 50% of the cost, but just sticking with the 80/20 rule concept)? i.e., i like to try to keep components roughly equivalent so what would be an 'ultegra-equivalent' headset that costs less than the Chris King? or should i just bite the bullet and get the CK?

Chris King Headsets are probably the best possible to get so other than a periodic check it will outlast you. But I also have no problems with the basic Headset supplied on any of my Road bikes. A Good one that I can recommend that is about 1/2 the price of the CK unit is "Hope". Made by an engineering company in the UK and I have one on the Tandem. Heavy duty and good.
Swopping the 105 over to your new frame will not be a problem but Remember about cables.I always make my own cables up using stainless steel inners and Shimano outers. That way I can get the cables to the right length and rarely have the abrasions on the frame that cabling can cause. Just to play safe get some of the wear patches so you can protect the frame where the cabling could damage the paintwork or surface of the frame. I get clear ones so you cannot even see them once fitted. And don't forget about new inner and outer cable ends when getting the cable--And a good set of cable cutters if you don't already have some. I have a couple -The Shimano pair that are good after 10 years of abuse and are the pair I prefer to use. They fit the hand perfectly. The other pair are Park- but they are not as comfortable in the hand and although they work well are not quite as easy to use.

Do you have a shop/mechanic you trust? I've taken three bikes to my local guy and asked him to install a headset that was of good quality and similar in quality to the rest of the parts. He does the install. Both bikes seem to work great.
The only downside I can see to moving parts from one bike to another is that you will no longer be able to ride the first bike. If that works for you, go for it!

Yes..I have two shops that I can work with that both are filled with old-school, steel lovin' mechanics. One focuses more on vintage, the other on racing. The old frame is going to eBay. But I still might just upgrade the group now. I have a feeling it will be based on my attitude the day the frame arrives, in terms of which way I go.

cleon, I've used most every road group that Shimano makes. I like to use the Ultegra group on fresh builds, but if I had a 105 group at hand, I'd go with that without any regrets.
While the CK headset is in my opinion the best of the best I've had excellent service from Aheadset and Cane Creek, WRT threadless headsets.

It looks like the CC 110 is not that far from the CK in terms of price anyway. Although I suppose I could easily get by with a lower end CC. I'm torn between knowing I don't need the 'best of the best', but at the same time the actual price difference isn't that much at all relative to the overall build/life of the bike.

Nothing against the higher priced headsets for special bikes, but I have never had a problem with lower end headsets like the Cane Creek S2 which you can find for under $30.
I'm about to begin a budget build to upgrade my son's outgrown bike to a larger size frame. I just ordered a cheap road frame from Nashbar to replace the cheap Nashbar frame he outgrew. I'll post separately when I start on it.
Looking forward to watching the progress on your build. Is this going to be the Gunnar sport mentioned in your sig?

Actually, I've got a few more questions I'll throw in here since it's basically the same thread. If I DID go with the Ultegra 6700 group, here's my tentative spec. And I would appreciate a sanity check on compatibilities if people don't mind. (frame specs on lower right of page, https://gunnarbikes.com/site/bikes/sport/)
edit: yes BluesDawg, this is for the Gunnar Sport which should be in my hands by next week! it's the Goldrush/Charcoal color scheme and I'll probably go with the Glossy Grey groupo if i upgrade.

And the biggie. I'm thinking either a Compact or a Triple with a 12-25 cassette as it's all hills around here and I'm not a particularly strong rider. Is there anything particularly crazy about using a 12-25? And I do need to worry about the derailleur cage either way or is it all compatible given it's all 6700?

I'm not sure what your question is about the 12-25 cassette. That is well within the range of normal. The 6700 RD is rated for up to 28 teeth.

Ok, this was impressive. I emailed Gunnar with the brakeset question and they responded within 11 minutes with a detailed response! Beats the heck out of Comcast CS.

So, after much angst, I pulled the trigger on a full 2012 Ultegra groupo (minus the brakes) for $785 in Glossy Grey, and then bought a pair of Tektro 538 brakes. I already have an Ultegra wheelset and halfway decent saddle (although might give the B17 a try) and just need to figure out the seatpost, stem, bar combo. I did go with a Compact and 11-28 cassette because my wife already made the triple to compact move and said she is fine on the hills around here so I thought I'd give it a try.
Any recommendations for a decent handlebar for a short armed rider?

Lol..thx jdon. I think at this point I'm emotionally committed to the bling factor. So I'm 90% sure I'll go with the Thomson Elite seatpost and CK headset just to round out the package. Haven't decided on the handlebars yet but looking at Ritchey or Deda shallow drop or ergonomic bars. I'll post some pics of the frame as soon as it arrives. Should be early next week!
edit: forgot to add that I sold my Harley to support the new hobby so I can justify a little bling here and there

Thanks Dawg. I like the Specialized as well. Any thoughts on the FSA Wing Pro Compact? There was a thread on that vs the Deda and most posters sounded like they favored the FSA. I recommended a buddy to the Roubaix just last month and he loved it and bought one within a week. Great bike. If I wasn't fixated on trying Steel, it's probably the bike I would have bought myself.

I have not tried the FSA Wing Pro Compact, but it is one I have read a lot of good reviews about and a top candidate when I was considering a custom build before I decided on the Expert. The flat top section is a nice feature imho.

The steel fork is very nice also! Very nice.
I have a tiny 41cm Gunnar Sport with a steel Surly Pacer fork and its got a wonderfully smooth ride. I'm sure you will enjoy yours tremendously! Beautiful color!
I'm over here on the western slope of Colorado and we have a few hills here too. My Sport is set up to tackle any climb with comfort: 9sp Ultegra triple with XT rear der and XT 11-34 cogs. It doesn't exactly make the Grand Mesa feel flat but it sure helps the knees.
