I take considerable pride in my ability to articulate my thoughts in the most coherent, accurate, and, dare I say, eloquent manner possible. Even if I have nothing of intrinsic value to say, or if what I say is pure balderdash, it behooves one to express one's mind with clarity.

Whaaazzzzuuuppp? Dude, ya catch my drift?

I'm sensing a growing backlash to the excessive use of imprecise language on the internet. It shows up at least a couple of times per week in the mechanics forum where OP's are chastised for inability to post a clear question.

That's what he was talking about. I've seen people who text and it looks like another language, devoid of proper words. Now some people then assume that anything done on line, needs to be in the same lingo, and most of use after looking at it for a while end up like this guy ->

Their speech form is going to be the downfall of western civilization. Why not communicate clearly and spell correctly. And they wonder why they cannot keep a job with these communication skills. Even the press and media are adopting that crap. Arrrggghhh.

Spelling errors abound, even here among folks who try to write correctly. I can't tell you how many times I've seen "peddle" or "chaff" around here, from well-intentioned posters who generally speak English and not text-speak. Is it proper to chastise them, or even offer a gentle correction, thinking that this is the intellectual equivalent of spinach in the teeth? Or is it better to ignore it?

Edit: Oh, yeah - "ridding," too.

^^^ what he said; sad, but true. I've been called one.

I never stop being amazed at how far literacy has fallen; but there are some folks here on BF that I flat cannot communicate with. I'm too far removed from all the minutae of participles and prepositions, but DAMN, I can make myself understood! (Or, at least I COULD, until the new illiteracy reared its foolish head -- I can speak plainly at work and have people say, "What do you mean by that?" Which words were hard to understand?)

Don't get me started on the misspellings, either -- HHOOOOOOOOOOO, BOY!

Well I try, but fact is if I type before coffee I can not think, if it is after coffee I shake. so...
Has nothing to do with Dyslexia or the failures of my public education system.
No way ca nit be my fault.

Incidentally when I use the word program to work up a post I get grumblings about the custom fonts or what ever.

So grammar police have your way with me, but remember I will most likely get offended, then discus the short comings of your mother, because that’s what us uneducated simple folk does. Smiley face.

oppsie the is the 50's forum, i am only 45 dang it.

When I came home tonight, there was a message on my answering machine. Out of the entire message, I was able to decipher my name and 9 out of 10 digits of a phone number, and that was by recording the message to a digital file with Audacity and processing the message and repeatedly listening to it very carefully with headphones.

I think it was a headhunting firm with a job lead but I am far from certain.

Add to all of this the overall difficulty of communicating to someone (in a professional / technical situation) who's fourth language is your native language (or vice-versa)...

I've had 'conversations' with technical support engineers from around the globe and it's not always easy, nor sometimes even possible, to decipher what's being said. I remember in particular one voicemail where the ONLY even semi-intelligible part of the whole message was the eight digit "support reference" number, which I already knew. Several of us repeatedly listened to it, but to no avail.

...and these are from two MAJOR leading multi-national technology corporations. What's annoying is being told that (after spending close to 7 digits on their products) we'll have to spend another $40,000+ anuually just to talk to someone from "North American Support"...

I have to be very careful when complaining about this, however. I don't in any way want to sound like I'm dimissing their intellect, knowledge or technical facility, since I'm not. Most likely, they're far smarter than I, but since I'm from the deep south USA and they're from Bangladore, for instance, the language barrier can sometimes be immense. Thank goodness for Webex chat....
