Never Know What You Will See On A Bike Ride

Beautiful day in Northwest Arkansas. I had my point-and-shoot camera with me as usual. I was coming downhill and saw some movement over to the right. As I got closer, I realized it was a red-tail hawk having his lunch. I almost ran into the curb trying to get unclipped and off the bike in time to get a couple shots. He continued to feast as I took 7 shots of his back, and, finally, he turned around on shot 8. I was so thrilled. I think they are magnificent birds, and feel so lucky to have gotten this shot. Just wish I had had my other camera with the big zoom.

What a spectacular sight! So lucky you had your camera with you, and that the bird was willing to let you take a few snaps.

Nice! I got a shot of one this past summer as well. He was sitting on a low branch right as I rode past on the bike trail. Stayed put just long enough for a couple of shots. Was glad I ride with the camera in my jersey pocket. He wasn't eating anything, however.

We have lots of Red-tailed Hawks here in Ontario, but I've never been able to get close enough for a shot like that.

Here's a Red-shouldered Hawk that was by the boardwalk at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida a few weeks ago (sorry, didn't take my bike down there!). It posed for a while before pouncing on a frog or something similar and eating it right in front of us. For some reason birds are more approachable in Florida than they are here.

We get hawks in our back yard trees. Don't have a good enough camera for nice shots though.

I'm guessing his lunch was not as thrilled as you. Great shot. You were fortunate to be there at the right time.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. I was lucky being in the right place at the right time. Of course, since he was having lunch and preoccupied, that made the photo shoot much easier, but I am still amazed that he let me get so close. I think I could have gotten several more shots if it were not for his mate in a tree close by who started having a fit the closer I got. On my last shot when he turned around, that was it, and he flew off and joined his mate in the nearby tree.

I hope this will inspire those who don't carry a camera on their rides to do so. I have gotten so many neat shots on my bike rides and will have those memories forever. I make a point to go out on bike rides where I have not been before, and just meander with no thought to speed or mileage, and they have produced some of the best photos.

Beautiful and such majestic birds. We have several around our area, it is rural and farm land with woods, perfect for hunting as hawk terrain goes. Carrying the point and shoot digital is a good idea. Mine would fit my jersey pocket perfectly. They can glide on wind currents for such a long time.
