Watching the radar, riding with fenders

Illinos, and most of the region, has seen rain on a daily basis for many days now. Edwardsville Illinois is the home to hundreds of regular cyclist, riding here has been curtailed. Local rivers are above flood stage.

I can't remember the last time I've seen completely dry pavement. However, I'm getting some cycling in without getting soaked.

Having a carbon fiber Cyclocross bike with fenders has made riding on rain soaked pavement a pleasure. Keeping an eye on the radar is helping to me stay dry and keeping me on the bike a few days a week.

How are you coping with the weather in your area?

The CF Merckx hangs on it's hook while the mudguard equipped winter/wet bike and the town bike have been out with regularity on the rain soaked roads.
Haven't seen a single other rider out and about in the last week although I've gotten the radar read wrong and had to stop to pull on the rain kit twice.

TX is a land of drought punctuated by devastating floods.
Fill that aquifer up to the brim!

Around here, all the rain comes in the winter... when we get PLENTY.

No fenders for the next few months

When I was in Missouri, I would just get rained on every once in a while. It never was clear what to do when I was out for a bike ride and heard tornado sirens all around me But, I don't think the summer rain was ever too cold.

We've had very wet weather for the past two years until recently, and it has hardly rained for the past month. When it's wet, I ride my bikes with fenders and keep close tabs on the radar. I agree that fenders makes riding much more enjoyable on wet roads. However, I get tired of riding my fendered bikes all the time and break out my fenderless bikes whenever we get a forecast for clear skies. The problem is that there is almost always a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms around here in summer.

We're settling into a common summer pattern here at the edge of the prairies, great riding in the morning, with some wicked winds and t-storms in the afternoon.
I can get away without fenders 9 times out of 10.

Where I am we frequently get rain. Now that I've take up biking again, I ordered fenders for my new ride from the get-go. For my CF hybrid. It's nice being old. One doesn't care what other people think.

Sweating heavily.

It pretty much stopped raining here a month ago, and I was a bit disappointed Bill went north. But since the fendered bikes have everything I need on them, I'm still riding them.

Not a fan of starting out in the rain but I don't mind getting caught once I'm all warmed up.

I'm with Clifford - I just pulled the fenders off my bike and they will stay off till late September/early October when they go back on for the winter.

No rain today and some sunshine in the afternoon! While I have multiple bikes that never wear fenders, I'll be on the bike with fenders due to the wet underpasses. I could really use some sunshine.

I commute every day and have used my winter bike with fenders twice since the beginning of Apr. Got a little wet yesterday (no fenders) but mostly it's been dry and sunny around here.

What are the Madison County trails looking like? Mrs. Grouch and I were planning to ride but there's reports of standing water on all of the places where we typically ride.

Maybe Monday.

98% of the paved paths in Madison County are now completely dry under a June sun. However, I expect to splash through a little standing water near and under the viaducts.

How is the KATY Trail?

Lots of mud and water on the paved MUPs around Chicagoland.... You should be back here enjoying it - along with a kayak!

It's been a wet two years here, too. I haven't been riding in the snow for a decade. So last winter I pushed my low temp limit back down to 12F from 23F make more biking days when it's dry. Next winter I am getting studded snow tires. And in the past I have not ridden to work when rain was likely even though I have bikes with fenders. And while I will ride in the rain if I am caught out in it, this year I have been beginning my ride to work in the rain. As everyone says, its not bad once you get underway.

Humidity!!!! I think it's been over 90% humidity in Chicago for 3 weeks at least. The other morning it was in the low 60's and I was sweating in my car driving to work. Breathing is as chore.

I started out on a bike ride one day and after two miles I had enough. Couldn't dissipate the heat. My head was about to explode. It was like 70 degrees and 99% humidity.

I'm also very close to Lake Michigan. Lots of fog. Temps drop 10-20 degrees in minutes. I imagine the water temperature is pretty fridgid.

There are about 4 places closed due to flooding. The nearest to us is between St. Charles and Machens at mile 34.

Tomorrow I'm taking a bus out to Clinton and riding the Katy back to St. Chuck taking 5 days. Hopefully the Missouri River will go down by then.
