No, Running made me take up Cycling

I started running before cycling. Although I took time to both ease into it AND to learn proper form, it was just too hard on the body. Switched to cycling and never looked back. Sooo much better.

I left running to cycle then left cycling to run again. The running ended in 2004 when I had the 2 vertebral fusions. Never looking back with all the Titanium in my low back. Bicycling doesn't hurt my back at all, I can ride on the flats, hoods or drops forever and not get pain. The fusions I have cannot take the pounding my Clyde body gives it. I was the biggest XC runner in HS and the only shot putter that ran XC. I was entertainment for the flyweights.

I quit running around 25 years ago because it played havoc on my knees. I've been back into cycling for the past 2 1/2 years and can't see me doing anything else. Looking back, I could kick myself for quiting cycling when I did.

Never liked running, never will. My wife did some running in her younger days, she has resumed running the past 2 or 3 years. I have tried joining her a couple of times, it just isn't fun.

I love hiking in hills, if I want to use my legs to exercise outdoors other than on the bike, I'll go hiking (and I probably hike 30% of the time, cycle 70% of the time). If I'm sticking around the house, I might jump rope.

But running? No, never, no matter how good my cardiovascular conditioning, I'll never be tempted.

But if you like it and it isn't beating you up too much, go for it.

I'm sitting here with sore ankles as I type this. (ran 6 miles tonight) I used to run a lot back in the day but it does cause me pain if I run more than 4 or 5 miles a week now.
I'm going tomorrow to check this out. www.elliptigo.com/ It looks like fun, you get the workout of running with out the impact on your joints, so they claim.

I'm running because I want to do a triathlon this fall. I can't say that I much enjoy it, but it is satisfying on some level. If I can get up to a 10k I'm going to buy myself a new bike and enter a rather hilly triathlon.

The "high" I used to get OCCASIONALLY from running is close to, but still less than, the "high" I get nearly EVERY RIDE on the bike. I stopped running nearly twenty years ago -- I'll stop riding when I can't get on the bike anymore. (I tell people I only run if my kids are spurting blood or on fire....)

I hate running. No matter how fit I get the pounding on my legs soon has my knees and ankles in pain. I ran up a hill and around an old castle for 3 months before my wedding to lose 10kg, but then I decided I'd stick with cycling. Much less stressful.

Yeah, I think after starting this thread and reading all the responses; which by the way, I am very grateful for, I am definitely getting over my impulse to start running again. I've been nursing a sore knee brought on by running a few days ago. I realize running takes a toll on the body, and cycling is waaaayyyyyy more fun.

Jumping rope sounds like a winner! Care to share your jumping rope routine?[/
QUOTE]

Started jumping routinely around 1982. Didn't jump from '87 - '97 during road racing career. Been steady with it since '98. I jump 100 or 200 at a time w/ about 30 sec-45 sec break, then go again. The 1st 3 reps of 100 at easy to moderate speed as a warm-up. After the warm-up-300, the rest are very fast:
- Monday (tired from Sunday ride): 1100 jumps (3 x 100s, then 4 x 200s)
- Tues: 1300 jumps (3 x 100s, then 5 x 200s)
- Wed: 1500 jumps (3 x 100s, then 5 x 200s, then 2 x 100s)
- Thurs: Same as Wednesday
- Sat (after my ride): 1000 jumps (10 x 100s)
Rest on Sunday/Friday

When one first starts JR program it's tough, and you'll look pretty clumsy. Maybe a few sets of 25 are a good for a while with gradual increases over time as fitness improves. If you stay consistent, you should get more finessful and smoother in a matter of weeks. Go as fast as you can handle. Assuming one doesn't have injuries to prevent JR, it's an excellent exercise! There's a reason boxers do it, and we all know how fit they are. It's actually low impact (once you get smoother and finessful); the actual jump is quite minimal off the ground. I've had my miniscus tears since 2003 and I'm still able to jump. I jump all yr in my garage. Can take the rope anywhere, vacations, hotlels, business trips, jump indoors/outdoors. After trying all types of ropes (leather, vinyl, plastic, rubber, etc) the inexpensive beaded type is by far the best and longest-lasting for all ground/floor surfaces, IMO. Over time you could learn to get fancy if you like (i.e., criss-crossing, running in place while jumping, fancy footwork, etc). Give it a shot. Good luck

Thanks for the input WC89! I'm going to give it a try!
