80 year old on skydive almost falls out chute!!!

Don't know what happened here, it seems she changed her mind at the last minute.
This is an AFF free fall jump. Whereas you jumped with an instructor(s)and after about a minute of freefalling with instructor(s) they turn you loose. However, with this jump it seems like a problem started right away. I know each time I did a jump, at the last moment when I am on the edge of the ramp, they always ask "do you want to jump?". If you say no, then you go to the back of the plane.

To tell the truth, even though the look down from three miles up is kind of scary, I have complete confidence in the instructors and the equipment. More safe jumping then in a car on the highway if you ask me..

Here I am doing an AFF.

Will be doing another AFF this year at 72..

Good for you, Mr Howard

[QUOTE=cehowardGS;14277993 they always ask "do you want to jump?". If you say no, then you go to the back of the plane.

You're clearly more at home in the air than I am - I'm not at all good with heights.
I can do it if I have to. As a Training chap, I've cooperated with Outward Bound and the Sail Training Association, doing high ropes and yardarms as part of confidence and trust building. Hated but Did!

I remember one jump with the Parachute regiment, not from an aircraft but from a high rise building, maybe 50 storeys, secured in a harness by a friction reel so from free descent the reel gradually braked to touchdown.

Like you, I had confidence in the blokes and the kit - but all the same - long way up!

Nothing about "do you want to jump?" on that occasion. I think it was very well done. " Have you had your lunch today Sir"? "Lovely, I had a roast beef sandwich, now if you'll just edge a bit forward...." gone....

Mind elsewhere, body willingly and passively propelled - those blokes are good!

First thing i thought of was she had diminished glutes...caused her to slip out of the harness.

Yea TV loves those stories .I saw that on the McNews
they said she got cold feet, ,tandem strapped to the guy, perhaps his
military training habits kicked in , and overcame the customer's needs ,
and treated it like she was a recruit in jump school..

Then there was this guy, who wasn't so lucky. If I wuz jumping out of a perfectly good plane, I'd sure be watching the guy packing the chutes like a hawk.

From the update on this story, the FAA is assessing fines of $90,000 on the Parachute Club that was running this jump. It appears in the video that she is being forced out.. And that caused the movement that made her slipped out of the harness. All the jumps I did, during insructions and in the plane, they ALWAYS asked you "do you want to jump?". If you say "no" you go to the back of the plane, none of the pushing out.. Anyway, I am glad it worked out right. IMO, if she had got hurt or killed, I think manslaughter might been an option.

three of us made our first jump when we were 18. went through all day training, then it was a prefect evening in the fall to jump. We got in the plane with the jump master in the back, while the pilot was puting a quart of oil in the engine. We went up to about 3000 feet and I was going to jump last. First guy jumps , second guy freezes, i said you better go or i will push you out, we had to step on a little thing and hang on to the wing, well he goes, then it was my turn i just about crapped myself when i got by the door the jump master was laughing is butt off. we all jumped and we lived.

Howard, In your pictures, you have the best looking boots, and they match the color of your helmet.

You are a pro!

She doesn't seem to think she was forced:

The fundamental problem was that her harness was not adjusted correctly.

I never could figure out why you would jump from a perfectly good, controllable plane. I only had one time when I thought I might have to quit the plane, but did a descent to near minimums on a partial panel and it all came out good.

Then again, you're not a real pilot till you've flown a Martin-Baker.

Jump schools/clubs offering jumps don't PUSH YOU OUT!! They always give you the option to turn around. You don't get any money back, but you don't get shoved out the plane. On my last jump, there was a couple there. They were scheduled ahead of me. I am still on the ground they up in the air. Anyway, the story went like this. The jump master asked the lady do you want to jump, she replied yes! She jumped. Then it came to her boyfriend, do you want to jump, the boyfriend looked down and said "NO".. . It is really understandable, the looked down is can be frightening.. One of my x girlfriends was a sargent in the Army, plus she zipped around the racetrack with me on motorcycles, but she passed on the skydive..To each their own...

Looking at the vid, it seem see is trying to stay in the plane, and the instructor is pushing her out.. That's my opinion on the vid..

IMO again, having your harness not adjusted correctly is way worst than being forced out.. In the former your chute doesn't open, in the latter, you are out there and your chute should open..

A Pro I am NOT!! The drop zone is 125 miles from me, I drove my motorcycle to the drop zone. I asked the Jump Master could I jump in my race boots, and they said ok. The company that made the boots were considering a commercial but they went out of buisiness..
