Medical questions

If you old geezers don't stop I think I might just shoot myself. Y I K E S !!
And I get lambasted for posting off topic about "whatever it was". Hell I don't even remember what it was. Oh, do you think I might have early Alzheimer's?

Well, heck! At our age it's either the weather or our inflictions whichever is more interesting. LOL.

Face it BBW, the state of medicine in America is a disgrace. What are we, #51 in the world for outcomes and quality of care? It's little wonder folks are interested in what other people who have shared their symptoms/maladies have to say about their situation.

In case this isn't obvious, such rankings are for the system as a whole. I have no doubts that we have many of the best medical practitioners in the world, it's just that we have a dysfunctional system that isn't working for us and definitely includes many incompetent folks at all levels.

Dude, this thread, like all others in the forum is voluntary. Just like tv, radio or surfing the internet, if you don't like it then why are you here? You do not have to read all of the "Old Geezers" problems if you don't want to!

To rephrase a Marx Brothers joke, "Doctor I hate it when I go there". Dr. says, ""Don't go there"!!

The medical advice here is free, and well worth it.

Heck, medical advice from a competent (or incompetent) "professional" costs me $$, and I never know the level of competency until I wake up in the morning or don't.

I prefer free.

Depends.

There are medical posts and there are medical posts. Three come to mind.

1) Someone has a condition and wonders what the experience of others with the same condition is. This seems reasonable to me. If I had just gotten over a case of Dengue and was wondering how long the other geezers took to get over it before they started biking, this seems entirely appropriate.

2) The "I realize no one here is a doctor but how do you treat Tsutsugamuchi fever?" type. These are not exactly inappropriate, but dang you could probably get more reliable information at Wikipedia, to say nothing the the Mayo site or the NIH site, than you get here. Why anyone asks that type of question here is a mystery.

3) The pseudo-question rant, like "Does anyone beside me have an idiot for a doctor in this stupid healthcare system?". These really belong in P&R and are often offensive and insulting to those who might actually work in the health care field. They are best ignored.

Why should we not ask for other's experience and what they know. If I called my physician's office every time I had a question they would block my calls. We talk to our friends, coworkers and others in similar situations, free speech protects this last time I checked. Educating myself about what is happening to my body, including asking others what they have experienced seems logical to me. I sincerely doubt anyone here has taken advice here as gospel and not sought out treatment for any problems they have.

Lighten up Francis, we are old enough and intelligent enough to make decisions based on our research and what we learn from any source there is available.

Bill

+1

They generally are pretty quiet about being a MD or DO, as liability can be a problem, and, no good doc would diagnose by bike forum posts. Sometimes they give background info. At one time we had a very vocal doc, and we had a GI guy who disappeared one day - totally. I had a PM telling more, but can not pass it on.

Of course, there are us REAL docs - PhDs and EdDs and others, but we don't give much medical advice.

I understand that across the pond the medical guys/gals are called Mr., Mrs., not Dr. True??

I think it is interesting hearing from other people who are near my age and bicycle a lot while dealing with various ailments. They are just one source of information but keep in mind that you may be the very first 50+ cyclist with your ailment that your doctor has ever encountered. I think the experiences of other cyclists your age with your ailment are particularly valuable when you have questions about whether you should keep cycling in spite of your condition. In these cases members of this forum who have actually been through the same thing may have better insight than a doctor who has limited experience with the geriatric cycling population.

Surgeons go by Mr./Ms., at least in Ireland. I would assume the same in the rest of the British Isles, but cannot say from personal experience.
