Now I know I am old

The head on my floor pump stopped working. I remembered using a heavy brass Silca pump head many years ago and that it worked well, but I couldn't find mine, so I looked for one on the interweb. One of the first hits I got had this in the description: "Like your grandfather used to use..."

I'm not old--just finely matured but age is relative and all my relatives are younger than me.

Funnily enough- I have been looking on the web for replacements of one or two of my "Old" style tools. The modern versions are cheaper- thinner- lighter and don't work as well as the old ones. Just like me.

When you are the grandfather now it just makes sense to me. I used to have a Silca head and now it is just like I used. Hmmmm. They are great pump heads, I have 2 in my tool box.

I was teaching a class and some of the kids were talking about a the movie Fast and Furious. I causally mentioned the movie Bullet, with Steve McQueen, and they all said as one; "Who's Steve McQueen?"

A few years ago, when McCartny played at the Super Bowl, my oldest daughter asked, "wasn't he in some other band once?"

In my head I feel 26, but my back and body feel 82. 82-26=56, so I'm perfect!

I rode through Cambridge last Sunday. I know I'm old now, because "the political people", the ones who are always in cambridge, taking surveys or soliciting for one cause or another,
didn't approach me at all. They looked at me, and ignored me totally. Years ago, they were in my face, asking me if I would like to support this thing or that thing.

Ditto on those rare occasions when I go into a (Oh, the horror..) Best Buy. The blue shirts leave me alone. I like it just fine.

You're old when you can't FIND any people who are 15 years older than you are!

Till then, we are merely... more experienced at being young.

Pffft! Best Buy, hh Gregg, CompUSA(before they closed around here), and some other places, customers approach me like I work there. I have no idea why they think I work at those places--even when I'm wearing a shirt that is not the color of the employees, I get approached by customers. Maybe I just look geeky.

I'm not saying I'm old, but I just recently retired my Silca pump after a mere thirty years of faithful service. Maybe I should bring it back from the dead yet again. Those are tough old pumps.

Hmm, interesting. Try this: Go into the home theater department, where they keep the accessories. Pick a coax cable off the shelf. Look at it very intently. When you get approached by one of the blue shirts, ("Can I help you"?) look at them very seriously, and ask what the insertion loss is for that cable. Hilarity will ensue. You might even get the "I'll check with my supervisor" bit.

(psst... most manufacturers list it on the back of the packaging, in very small print, but don't mention this. Have some fun.)

On a more serious note, if you have any Best Buy gift cards, better use them. I don't think they'll be around much longer.

I know i am old because, recently, I came downstairs wearing a dress I hadn't worn in a really, really, long time. Just to be sure it didn't look too dated, and not mentioning where I got the dress, I asked my son what he thought of it. He said, "Well, it's a nice dress, but not your usual style. I've never seen you 'dress vintage' before."

If I were your old man, I would likely say "is that new?" I'm not tuned in to fashion. Drives my wife crazy.

One thing that 36 years this Monday has taught me its to keep my mouth shut about clothes and just say "You look really great tonight, Kitten." Your son has a lot to learn about living with a woman, good thing you aren't his girlfriend. Actually that was a pretty good line, just poor delivery timing.

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy.....

You might be an old fart if.....
The fact that Plavix just went generic represents a significant financial windfall for you.

You just might be an old fart if....
The second place you look when you've lost your car keys is in the refrigerator.....

You really ought to consider yourself an old fart if...
The main reason you bought a Garmin Edge 800 is it has the ability to guide you back home when you finally realize you're totally lost
