Crashes are always a surprise
I had a close call today that impressed on me how impossible it is to avoid some accidents. I was riding in Rehobeth Beach DE with my 2 year old grandson in a carrier on the back. As I rode along an uncrowded residential street with 45 degree angle parking to my right an idiot passed by my wife and I on the left and made a sudden right hook into a parking spot immediately in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and stopped with a slight tap against the car. I was barely able to get my foot out of the clip and prevent a potentially disastrous fall. If I had been riding at even a moderate clip I would slammed into this idiot. I cursed the guy roundly as did my wife. He refused to get out of the car or roll down his window so we just rode on. My wife thought that maybe he was on a cell phone.
Scared the hell out of me. |
Some don't ever think.

You could have feigned a little thump and alot of pain......then an accident report :D

BIG Thump would have been in order on this one.Hard enough to hurt your hand and give him a panel repair bill.

Close ones don't count.
Have been hit at 45 mph by pickup truck. Oh. . . still riding! |
Glad you and your family are OK and we will assume the driver will be more careful in the future.

Just be glad it turned out the way it did. No damage. There's inattentive people everywhere.

I"m glad you reacted in time. I had my first right hook last Friday. I was moving about 15mph and had just enough time to start braking. If I had been 10 - 15 feet further I would have been hit or would have T-boned the van. I felt a little mollified that I wasn't paying better attention - but, like you said, sometimes it's a surprise.

Glad you are okay, hope the idiot can be stopped from driving like a moron. the cellphone is probably spot on. GRrrrrrr.
