Couple questions from 73 year old
 
Any hints for riding with hearing aid? Impossible to use my BTE due to wind noise. Would love to hear bike noises and traffic behind me.
Back on bike after 23 year break and wondering what I can do, time wise, for century in one or two years. I like goals and not sure sub 5 hour is reasonable at 75.
Any different riding techniques needed for older riders?

If you can average 15 mph and not loiter too long at the rest stops you should be able to finish a century before the organizers pack up and leave. Good luck and ride lots!

7-8 hours would be a reasonal time.

Welcome ctpres. We are the same age. This is my third year of cycling. I have found my main difficulty is recovery after a hard effort. While even young people will vary, even vary quite a bit, in their ability to recover, it is certain than men out age will recover more slowly. This means that young people can train harder and more often and thus make faster progress. For us, we/I need to pay close attention to recovery nutrition and to find a sustainable routine.

I do no structured training but I try to improve my weak areas, climbing and sustained higher speeds. Good information for older people was suggested to me here by Denver Fox, "Cycling Over 50" by Joe Friel. My longest ride has been 70 miles but 10wheels, who is near 70, does several centuries a week.

NOT reasonable. Find a nice flat 20 mile route with as few stop signs and lights as possible, work on riding that route as close to one hour as possible. That will be a hard goal and one you can track your progress.

The deafness is not a problem I encounter so can't tell you about the wind noise. Most problems will come from behind so find a mirror that you can use with ease and it should take some of the risk factor away.

Only 65 and been riding for 22 years and I would love to do a sub 5 hour century. 100 miles in just on 7 hours is my best and that was several years ago.

My hearing aids get left behind when I ride. As you noted too much noise. Ambition is a good thing. Sub 5 hour century is full of ambition. It will require, however, much more than ambition. How fit are you? How much time can you devote to training? Will the century be flat or hilly? All of these will come into play.

You might need a coach who will guide you to your goals. In So Calif, there's one trainer, Robert Kahler who has such a system. Don't know where you're at but try this

I am 63, did a 56 miler today in 4:20, very happy with it. If I could have done 46 more in 40 minutes I would have been showing off:roflmao2:

I guess from replies so far - 100mi ok but maybe under six hours. Only time will tell. Tuned and adjusted new bike today. Followed a twenty mile route I had averaged 12mph on a couple days ago with the mtn. bike. WOW twentyfour miles and hour on the new one!
OPS new speedo set for km. Boy it felt good for awhile.

I wear hearing aids, but not while I'm riding. They make more noise where you can't hear anything.

As far as riding a century, what's your hurry. Just enjoy the ride no matter how far it is, unless it's on your bucket list. If it is, it's still going to take some time before I would try it. Good luck.

I also wear BTE hearing aids. If I am riding alone, I leave them at home. However, on a group ride I can't hear well enough to carry on any kind of conversation without them. It is difficult even with them. In cool weather, I wear a bandana over mey forehead and covering the top of my ears and the hearing aid. This does a pretty good job of cutting the wind noise, but might be a problem if one perspires very much. Damage from perspiration concerns me more than wind noise, but so far it hasn't been a factor. Though I have come back with the bandana soaked and no apparent ill effect on the hearing aids. In warmer weather I use a product called the "Hearing Aid Sweat Band". It is designed to keep perspiration away from the aid. I have used them for a couple of years, and they work ok. They also do a good job of cutting wind noise. Actually, I wear them more often for that than for moisture control. They are a little pricey, I think about $30.00 shipped, but I would buy them again. I might try just wrapping a piece of terry cloth like material around the aids, I think it might work as well.

The sweat band comes in several sizes, I ordered the size recommended for the length of my hearing aid, which fell exactly on the line, i.e., for a 1 1/2 inch hearing aid order the 1 1/2" sweat band. I should have ordered the next larger size, the one that is supposed to fit does, just barely. I would prefer a little more material.

There is another product, which I haven't tried, that attaches to the helmet strap in front of the ear and claims to cut wind noise. Actually, they have two products.

I also intend to purchase Siemens new Aquaris hearing aid when my current pair need replacing. They are water proof, to a point, and dust proof. And no more expensive than my last pair. These should eliminate any concern about damage from perspiration. I have become less concerned about any damage from perspiration knowing I can get a pair where that would not be as much of a concern.

Under 5 hours for a century? Not impossible, but highly improbable!
Have ridden two sub-5 hour centuries (back-to-back) when in my 40s. Did one double century in 12 hours in my late 50s.
Am now 80 and still riding, but no more centuries or doubles.

OP here: 1. requested pictures of new wheels so while was at it I added pic of the old. Seat being adjusted as I was taking pictures. I don't ride like that.
2. Just to explain my 100 mile goal. Near 50th birthday completed Katy Flatland 100 in under five fours and had a accident in the middle. Sag wagon driver opened door on my face. Have done other 100's: Goatneck 100, Gator 100, Beltway-8 100 and more. Took a twentythree year break and just now starting back in the saddle. With 75th birthday a little less than 2 years away I am dreaming about doing the Katy again. So the big question - what time/goal do I shoot for?
3. Someone asked about health EXCELLENT and then some.
4. Also asked about type of 100: Flat.
After hearing from y'all, my current training goal will be under six hours and if I do really well I can always up to sub. 5
After two weeks - where am I now. This AM 18.8 mi in 1.5 hours. Long way to go
