+50; Already Dead to Advertisers, Marketers
I've been thinking how dead and gone you are to the advertising industry once you pass 50, and lots of businesses/industry as well. Ever see someone with white hair in Bicycling Magazine? (obvious points to you if you've never read Bicycling Magazine)
I saw this in an article:
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Get ready: Nielsen is once again trying to challenge one of the industry's oldest chestnuts -- that consumers over 50 aren't worth the expense to target . The measurement-and-data giant is out to prove that it is advertisers' continued focus on younger customers that's out of date, thanks to a massive and aging population of baby boomers as well as changes in consumers' lifestyle sparked by new technology.
I can't wait until they re-target me as a prime consumer. My imagination runs wild...
ZZ Top modeling spandex bibs...
Imperial IPA w/added fiber...
GetOfMyLawn brand jerseys and apres ride wear...

Ever picked up Road Bike Action magazine? Lots of letters, stories, and articles about older cyclists.

I wish!
Seldom does a day go by that somebody isn't asking to provide me with some kind of insurance or something. They get real good with their pitches too - making me think they already have some lind of business connection with me.

Hans Wiemann loves me, at least!

You gonna eat that?
I've flipped through cycling mags once in a while at a bike shop or something, and I've never found anything to catch my interest. Seriously. Whether any of them were Bicycling Magazine, I couldn't tell you. I don't race, I don't ride newer equipment, I don't see anything the mags that compels me to read.

I, for one, don't mind flying under the advertiser's radar. Let's face it, by 50 we probably have everything we need; maybe not everything we want, of course!

I don't think this is entirely accurate, that we're not worth advertisers' time of day. For one thing, I have read that our demographic buys more music than anyone else (maybe because we aren't good at or dishonest enough to download it for free!). If you go into grocery stores, they're always playing great 60's music.
We have the disposable income in most cases. It'd be crazy if they didn't take that into account. And of course they have a ready-made crowd for bicycle enthusiasts who want to get back into it, we're proof of that. And the travel industry... I always thought we were more targeted rather than less.

Lot's of TV insurance and health ads feature 50+ folks - all riding hybrids except one, which I can't recall right now. Kaiser Permanente has lots of 50+ "exercise" ads.

I have noticed many ads on Universal Sports geared towards the 50+ crowd. The bicycling crowd must realize we are the biggest buying group, IIRC.
+1 on Road Bike action and their articles and features on 50+ riders. Main reason I subscribed to this magazine, pretty good stuff in it each issue.

Sorry didn't mean to high-jack the thread.....Now back to the topic at hand....
Maybe someone needs to come out with a cycling magazine for the Fifty + crowd.

Around here , I seem to see a lot of targeted ads . What I hear from OSF (My HMO) is mostly about 50+.
Where and when I grew up, in the midwest in the 60's and 70's, advertising just was not the business it is today .
When I worked in the business , I paid attention to all ads .
When I ran a retail concern , just that trade's ads .
Now , I pay attention to no ads .
Just the results you'd expect from a person
exposed to 50 years of commercial speech.
Still , I have to say there is no feeling like hearing an ad you wrote ,blaring from another persons' car radio.

Really, Cialis and other drugs, Just for Men, AARP, LTC insurance and the like are obvious exceptions; we are their target market. I think the article is referring to the mainstream, and we aren't part of it.

I think there is a rebound coming. As the youngsters realize their future is screwed unless they save like fiends, their spending will slow down. We, on the other hand, will adopt a "can't take it with you" approach making N+1 look darn good.

When I was a kid, I bought music on 45rpm records - they were about 98¢. Now I buy MP3s for... about 98¢. Of course a record has two sides but usually the B-side was a song you never listened to.
I can't say though that I see much marketing for me to buy more MP3s... other than Amazon showing me what they think I might like.

Naw, they might as well spend, too. Between double and triple taxation on savings as necessary sources of revenue and the inflation from all the paper money the Fed is printing, youngsters' savings will melt like snow in summer.
