Long Biking Pants With Shorts?

Now that the weather is cooler I purchased a pair of Specialized long biking pants from my LBS. they have a thin fleece lining and are warm. However, there is no padding in the seat area, and therefore gets uncomfortable on longer rides. Do the long pants normally come without padding, didn't notice it when I bought them. I feel I still need the padding provided in a normal biking short. Should I wear the shorts under the long pants? Anyone else have this issue?

We wear the long pants (tights) over the shorts.

Thats what I do. Biking shorts under longer hiking pants. Its actually helps to keep warm on a reall cold day as well. The shorts and long hiking socks make for an extra layer.

I wear my normal padded Bib Shorts under a L/W pair of cycling bib shorts with no padding. In colder weather I might make a concession and swop the Normal bib shorts for my winter weight Knickers And this has done me well down to around 20F. Much colder than that and I would not be riding as I don't have a topcoat large enough to go over the Many extra layers I would need at that temp.

Many years ago I had unlined normal tights (Non Bib) and if they were the outer layer- they kept slipping down and rucking up. Cure was to wear them under the shorts- but Bib Tights do look better when worn outside.

Wear the shorts over your leggings.

Completely fashionable

IMO It is a lot more comfortable to wear the padded shorts under the tights. Otherwise you have the seam from the tights rubbing against bare skin

I have a couple pairs of old (1970s) wool tights. With those, I wear regular shorts with chamois. I also have a more modern set of tights with an integral (synthetic) chamois. With those I go "commando."

I wear Nike running tights over shorts. As someone else mentioned the shorts under the tights prevents chaffing from seams.

OP you could come over to the 'Bent' side.

Soft comfortable seats,
no bodyweight resting on wrists,
no neck strain look out and around,
then you can wear good old comfortable baggy sweat pants with a velcro leg strap
or two to keep out of the chainnings..

Another vote for non-padded tights over regular shorts or bibs. I just picked up a new lightweight lycra pair for almost-cold temps from Aerotech at the Hilly Hundred vendor tent a couple of weeks ago for only $20. Sweet deal.

I know they make and sell padded tights, but I just can't feature them for some reason.

I've been wearing shorts over padded biking shorts all summer: Partly because I like having the pockets and partly because a female friend told me it was illegal for anybody over 50 to weat lycra...

Now I am wearing them under some old Asics running pants that I have had laying around. They zip closed at the ankle, they are warm and they dry quickly in the wet...
... Plus i still get a couple pockets (although pockets are not an issue when I'm wearing my gore-tex overlayer.)

I wear the tights over the shorts. I have also worn regular pants over shorts but those need a velcro strap around the right ankle.

On this subject, is there any long pants with reasonably tight legs available. I have a pair of spandex tights but hate them. I just want a pair of pants that dont have the legs flapping in the wind.

We wear "Padded Underware" then our un-padded tights, we've found that using our normal padded shorts with the tights didn't work as well. Padded underware usually has a "thinner pad" and works for us, YMMV.

I quite like the Castelli gel liners: https://www.rei.com/product/765677/ca...rts-liner-mens
I wear them under all manner of other clothes. For tights I have some Adidas running pants that aren't exactly skin-tight tights but quite streamlined--no flapping around, warm enough.

hmm ... could those be leg warmers, and not tights? I usually just wear leg warmers and shorts, unless its really cold and windy.

I took a slightly different route. I wear a pair of "liners" essentially bike shorts meant to wear under other shorts. They look the same as bike shorts but are light gray. I wear leg warmers that come up to and cover a bit of the liners shorts. I then wear a pair of cargo shorts over the liners. If it's really cold I wear a pair of fleece pants over that. I can remove the leg warmers and or fleece pants to fine tune just what I need according to temps or wind.

+1 (except they're Asics instead of Adidas)

I have padded biking undies, and I just wear them with regular cut-offs (repurposed from pants with holes in the knees) in warm weather, and with my old jogging sweatpants (plus thermal undies, if it's really cold) in not-so-warm weather.

Rootman has a sensible take on practical bicycle clothes layering.

I have a choice in cooler weather, a pair of unpadded tights I wear over a pair of bike shorts or a pair of padded bib tights. Either way works quite well for me.
