Weird noise while riding today

So, I'm riding this am, in daylight which is weird for me. Anyway, I'm riding along and after about 2 or 3 miles I think I'm hearing some strange sound, like a buzzing, or vibrating but not vibration. It doesn't appear that riding is a problem and, while riding, I try to locate the source. I touch various parts, the light, the frame, the odometer. I notice if I slow down, it sounds more like a whirring and below 9mph it disappears. Around 13 miles I touch the front brake side arms and the sound is gone. At 14 miles I stop to figure out what the heck is making the noise. After dismounting and looking at the brake area, I chuckle out loud. I find a brown, dried up leaf and stem caught in the brake arm with the leaf rubbing the wheel. After pulling the leaf out I continue my ride--28 more miles and no noise.

Nothing like the fall-out from fall weather to get the heart pumping.

Leaves, wet leaves, wet roads, rain, wind and cool weather, all make for some interesting rides.

I rode my fixie today and every so often I could smell burning rubber. About 8 mile into the ride I figured it out. Every time I would go off the saddle or hammer up a roller the rear tire would hit the chain stay. While just riding along the wheel tracked straight. I finally used the small crescent wrench I always carry.

As a side note, but not related to the noise, on the end of my 42 mile ride, about 2½ miles from the end, I did a sprint up a 200 yard or so incline at about 20mph(if I had to guess, it would be a 100 ft rise).

As long as it wasn't an engine noise, you're golden.

I was getting a weird rhythmic noise from my back wheel yesterday. Sounded like I had something on my tire. But it was intermittent. Drove me nuts for about 10 miles. Turned out the velcro strap on the seatpost for my toolbag wasn't all the way down and I was going through periods of having it catch on my shorts on the upstroke.

LOL, had the same thing happen just the other day, although the sound reminded me of "playing cards in the spokes" of the bicycles of my youth!

Have to correct the distance of the sprint. I checked the odometer and it's more like a 2/10 mile sprint rather than only 200yds. Do note that I started the ascent at around 22 mph at the bottom(because of a short descent prior to the 352 yard sprint up my guess of a 100 foot rise).

[QUOTE=Bikey Mikey;14937590]I think I'm hearing some strange sound, QUOTE]

Yes indeed, I hear that sometimes. Sounds like some older fellow exhaling. There's also an intermittent groaning, quite often coincident upon my getting a leg over the saddle

The last weird noise I heard was everytime my right crank hit about 8:00 or so it would click. Did that for many miles . . . then it stopped. Then it started again, but this time at more like 3:00 (right crank-wise).

Finally did an autopsy of the BB and found a couple of totally disintegrated Ceramic bearings. Oh well, back to steel bearings and no more clicking noise! Wish it just could have been a dead leaf stuck in the fork . . .

I have a strange clicking noise I hear, while I am pedaling, at almost any cadence or speed. A Ti screw in my spinal hardware has broken off its head and the screw and Ti plate rubbing past each other makes an audible clicking sound. it even clicks as I am walking around, kind of funny to watch people looking around for the source when I walk through an office or other fairly quiet place. My wife likes it because she can keep tabs on me moving around.

I really hope you're o.k.

That story put a huge grin on my face.

Cheers,

Bill,
My titanium screws had these crazy articulated heads that allowed the rods to be aligned between screws that were essentially skewed in orientation with one another. If one of your screw heads has failed, the fastener part either wasn't tightened down properly, or the articulated head broke. In either case, do you think that it might be a warranty issue and you could go back to the surgeon to have it repaired or replaced.

Phil

The customer service people said it was out of warranty and I had violated the terms set out in the owner's manual I got in the recovery room.

The neurosurgeon checked them when I first heard the noise (2007) and was concerned about a graft rejection (it was my bone, and not likely it was an autologous graft) but that wasn't it, he felt around the scar area and found the head that was broken off out of the 4 screws and pressed on it hard. I stood up fast and he smiled and said that it was a screw broken off and that unless it began to hurt badly he wouldn't remove or replace it, the graft was very well taken in and was pain free, thankfully, so I said just leave the thing in me. Some Ti alloys are subject to brittle break failure and the plate's hole was unchamfered so it caused the screw to break where they met.
