Only a couple of shades of tandem selling
But, gosh, I mean
A couple thought my tandem suited them. Previous thread, I'm clearing out in preparation for a move. Bikes on a 'Sale or Return' basis.
Gave the future 'Captain' a coaching ride. Gave the future 'Stoker' a coaching ride. Accompanied them both on my bike alongside for about 10 miles to make sure all was well.
Got a call from the stoker. 'Going to give you your bike back. He just doesn't ride it as considerately as you did'.

Next time refer them to the forum Tandem section... I'll bet the cap'n didn't follow rule 1: the stoker is always right.

I have a tandem kayak, the slang term for them is 'divorce boat'. Could the same be said for bikes?

Give them a tutorial on the rules. The stoker is always right cos if she isn't-A Slap on the buttocks hurts.

My wife and I always loved (separately) canoeing and kayaking growing up. I think we've done it 3 times since we've been together and only the third time ended up with smiles. Part of that was that trip was done with family so we couldn't yell at each other, but also, we'd gotten into a rhythm that time. That was probably 6 years ago at least and I'm sure the next time we try will be as bad as the first time again.

Been teaching tandeming since 1975.
Taught well over a hundred couples. 99% like it.
Explain to both how to mount/hold the tandem. Communication is key. Teach what the key words are. What to do and not to do (stoker do NOT do the hula back there and do NOT try to steer!).
After you explain all that, take the prospective captain for a quick spin as stoker.
I've just told 'em how to communicate but . . . within the first 100 feet I shift, jam the brakes, swerve without saying a word.
The new prospective captain is of course startled. But I say "this is what it feels like when you do NOT communicate with your stoker. Now, let's communicate properly."
When I take the prospective stoker out, I'm super attentive, communicate properly and all's well.
Then after that, let the prospective captain take the bike out solo so he can get the feel/handling of the long bike.
After that, the prospective captain takes me for a ride as stoker and I critique what he did right/wrong. I usually stand up on the pedals and stomp on it to show what that feels like.
Only after all that do I let the couple get on the bike together.
We do offer the use of a hatpin to stoker to use on captain if he screws up . . . it works!
Explain to them that is a bit of learning curve, but things will keep getting better/easier.

Sounds about right! It's a rocky start but once you find your way, it's great! We've had a couple big disagreements on the bike the first month of riding tandem.
Once we found our groove, we didn't touch the singles for nearly two years. We ride the tandem on occasion as a reminder of how much communication is involved. The more you ride, the better it gets!
One of the tricks to a happy tandem is when she asks if you feel her lagging, "No, you're doing good honey!".
