The problem is that until someone is found guilty in a court of law, they remain a suspect, or the alleged perpetrator. The guilty verdict in a court of law then makes them a perpetrator.

Putting aside bad journalism or reporting, there are also legal issues with media getting the meanings mixed, and a person accused outright of a crime as a perpetrator, when they might only be a suspect can open the door to defamation action and damages.

It's an area that web media owners have sneered at so far, but there are growing numbers of cases in which people have sued large organisations and their authors for defamation by publishing material that was malicious, and not fair public comment.

Then there is the "n-word", or "f-word", both of which I find as offensive as if they actual word were used. Use of either reminds me of of 1st graders seeing what they can get away with.

When I started doing drywall, it seemed like everyone wanted to be a western movie star. Drywall knife when they meant a putty spreader, and screw gun.

I caught myself doing that one time.

I think we really need more gender neutral words for people. There are a lot of times when it just does not matter if the person is male of female. I've noticed guys becoming more inclusive and sort of appreciated it for that reason. People are using 'they' when they just mean a single person, to be able to include both genders.

It would be nice to start a whole new set of gender neutral pronouns. Something like se (pronounced see) to mean he or she.

You beat me to it. That one gets to me seriously. Another one that is close is 'think outside the box.'

Back in the 70s there was a local letter-to-the-editor writer who seemed to have something posted in our small-town newspaper just about every day. His views were rather extreme even for Idaho (I won't say which way... )

He ended every letter by signing off NUFF SAID.

I always thought, "apparently not..."

My top-o'-the-list annoyance is being addressed as "you guys" when my wife and I go out to dinner. Now, this is never a problem in fine restaurants. Never.

On the rare occassion when we must eat elsewhere, having the server greet us with "you guys" is, well, exasperating. Where are the social graces being taught?

My wife is "Madam" or "Ma'am", and I am "Sir". That's all. If you are younger than me and are neither related by birth nor familiar, you call me "Sir".

That's how it is, or should be...

+1, Phil, I was born and raised in the south, as were my parents and I am a Marine. We were raised to say Sir and Mam to anyone older than we were (or outranked me, which was most everyone.) I had a student teacher in High School that was from New York, NY. I have always answered a teacher with ...Sir or ...Mam when I was addressed or was addressing them. He grabbed me as I was leaving the drafting classroom and pinned me to a wall, telling me that if I answered him smart-assed (his words) again with that Sir crap he would write me up and see that the Dean's office suspended me. I was dumbstruck, fortunately the teacher saw what was happening and came to my rescue, explaining to the student teacher that if I didn't answer in the manner I did my parents would tear my lips off and then get rough with me. Marine Corps military bearing and courtesy came easy to this southern boy, nothing new.

So I guess that lack of speech respect for elders, customers or just plain everyday is my pet peeve. I will continue to answer in the correct manner, hold the door for a lady, open the car door for my wife or any other lady and be polite in my conversations. Yep, I am an old times person. No apologies for that, though.

The more wind the better. If really blowing I would ride my trike with its wind screen, and the seat reclined more than usual. My state is really windy in the spring, and I have been on rides that have actually blown DF riders off the road. Also going into the wind, I have seen really strong DF riders unable to make more than 7 to 9 mph when pedaling directly into it. I smile and ride past.

I know, my friends who ride recumbents always like it when it's windy. My point was that if you did an 8 hour climbing ride you would get tired and suffer a little just like the rest of us. Maybe even have an awesome epic sufferfest.

My Dad was a Marine (discharged 1948) - and as far as I knew, his name was Dad, but when he gave firm direction, it was Sir. We were taught that men were to be addressed as "Sir", unless they had been introduced, in which case, "Mr. So-and-so" or "Doctor So-and-so" were also acceptable.

Dad died in 1993. He was a better man than I had realized.
