socks and cycling

What"s with the socks.I have 15 pairs of white ankle socks,10 pairs of white below ankle socks and a basket of mismatches.Recently, black socks are cool!So now I have 6 pairs of black over ankle socks and no under ankle black socks yet.I prefer white over my ankle sock but I stand out like a dork as the kids would say.So I push the black and white over ankle socks down under the ankle to look cool. When its cool out I have the socks over my ankles for warmth dork or not.Don't worry kids I threw out my knee high socks years ago..

Sorry, I don't give a damn about what others think of the socks I'm wearing. I don't have clipless--I have toe clips and sneakers(walking shoes) and I use wool hiking socks(sometimes even two pairs).

I don't worry about my socks, I already look like a dork because I'm wearing a bike helmet!

Socks are the least of my dork-attire. Magic styrofoam hat complete with blinking rear light, wool knickers when it's cool (most of the year), reflective vest, cycling shoes that spend half the year covered in reflective insulation held on by duct tape, all topped off by knee socks (I didn't throw mine out and often replenish my stocks) with some reflective velcro ankle bands.

Then I add the electronic safety/document the murder equipment:
1. Spot-to find the body.
2. Cell phone-in case I happen to have trouble close enough to town that I actually have a signal.
3. Go-Pro facing the rear. Smile when you run me over.
4. Flashing 1200 lumen front light.

Put it all on a thirty-year-old steel bike and it's no wonder I ride alone. Who would want to be seen with that?

Going by the number of socks you have-I doubt that any of them are "Cycling Specific".

Didn't believe how good they are till My LBS gave me a pair for a long ride I was doing. NO Cotton content and not all that thick but I finished that ride with no foot discomfort and no sweaty feet. Since then it is the cycling socks whenever I am out on the bike. Then there are the Sealskinz that are waterproof and warm for winter riding.

So what you need are plenty of Cycling socks and it doesn't matter what colour they are providing they are identifiable with the sport of cycling. Even "Wallymart" branding would be OK except they are probably not the right material and would get religious (Holy) in a very short space of time.

I had trouble with the sock thing, too. Fortunately, my wife presented me with a pair of CycleCuffs and now you can't see how gauche I really am. I like them better than my 6 buckle galoshes which were slightly tight in the toe clips!

Those are the ones I use.

And when it's warm, I use the Adidas low-ankle running socks bought from Costco as well(I hazard to guess that there isn't a huge difference between the Adidas socks and cycling specific socks.).

Socks make a cheap Christmas or birthday gift... I have a lot of cheap friends and family... my sock drawer is full.

I like them though, sometimes I feel like the Lion of Flanders, sometimes I feel patriotic, and sometimes I feel like a scary clown... socks for every mood.

Color is irrelevant.
What matters is that they are wool.

I am not fussy about socks. Well, as long as they are cut just above the ankle, not too much elastic, breathable and comfortable and a colour and design that match my bibs, jersey, helmet, gloves and bike. Other than that, pretty much anything is acceptable.

Even the Velominati proclaim that sock color is irrevelent. Socks are socks.

As long as they are wool, at least this time of year.

Go all out and make your own fashion statement! Wear purple/black stripes on one foot, and green/orange checkerboard on the other! And make sure they're both knee-high!

Just remember, when they ask, it's not what you just found at the bottom of the sock-bin; it's a FASHION STATEMENT! You meant to do that. Really.

Many a time My wife has sadi to me before a ride; "You're wearing THOSE socks?!?"
I don't care what they look like, if they are comfortablem I wear 'em.
This goes back to my philosophy of "I'm over 50 years old, I no longer care what anybody else thinks about me or anything else. I'll do to me what I please".

Any color socks you want, so long as it isn't white. White socks quickly become not white socks when combined with chain oil, road dust and sweat.

Mind you that goes for anything. There was a time when I didn't own a single item of white clothing, or bedding, or anything else at all. It definitely made the laundry easier.

I keep my black dress socks on for the ride home on my commute. Strangely, they seem more comfortable than the more traditional athletic socks. For more than ten miles though I couldn't say.

Seriously. I have some dirt cheap grey lightweight hiking socks I got at Walmart that are my current faves. They were like 3 pair for $4.99 or something.

I too like socks, and consider them essential to proper cycling expressiveness and self-esteem. Proper socks are not to satisfy others but to satisfy myself. Length and material are much more important than color. DeFeet "Blaze" are extremely good and work well even when you aren't riding and they only come in dark gray which looks almost black. I also have some Capos that are left and right foot specific.... got them reversed once and could not ride hardly at all. It was a real disaster. But on the correct foot they are great for warm to hot weather.

And hey Diablo.... where can I get me some Lion of Flanders socks? Those sound cool!
