As I sit here at 6am it is a house popping -12F outside. We keep the indoor temp around 65deg. Cold doesnt bother me anymore now than when I was 35yrs old. When you love being outside you dress for it and learn how to prevent chills. In the autumn months I'm up in a treestand for hours on end. Winter brings "who cares how cold" snowblowing. Spring brings early rides when it's 35deg. Am I sensitive to the cold at this age?? Sittinng here drinking coffee I am wearing thermal undies, extra pairs of socks and a hoodie.

In general I am not more sensitive to cold than I was. I have found the need to wear gloves more often but I'm not certain if it is due to more senitivity or me being more sensible.

You live in your deer stand? Man that is commitment to hunting, I thought my next door neighbor was bad with the stand in his back yard. We live against a large wooded tract that used to be a hunting leasehold and the deer are plentiful around here. I've walked out the back door and come on a doe and fawn grazing the mast in our back yard's woods, drives our dogs nuts.
I'm an upland bird hunter myself, our son is starting deer and upland this next season with his best friend. We inherited several rifles and shotguns when my F-I-L passed away. Planning to teach him bird hunting nearby, the deer will be up to one of his friends and our neighbor. The deer woods are too cold for this old guy, now.

Had to crank this fireplace up this morning. Gas....40K BTU. Not terribly cold (15F) but the wind is rattling through the windows of our old (1763) house.

Wow, how's the insulation? That's pretty interesting having a historic home. Have you run a metal detector across the yard?

Better Fabrics and Clothes Today...
My body runs warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I guess that it just runs efficiently, so weather doesn't affect me very much.
So, I like to ride year round. The winters are generally mild(er) in northern VA, so it's possible unless there's heavy snow or high winds.
What I wanted to point out is that athletic clothing has gotten many times better over the last generation or so. Thin wool socks, better footwear, and neoprene booties make a huge difference. Wind blocking and insulating fabrics, wool and spandex/silk blends, layering of gloves, variations in synthetic headgear...these are all way better than when I was young.
Then, we simply put on our winter coats and gloves and rode. The fit was poor and movement was severly restricted.
I've learned over the last 5 years ago to wear less and ride cooler. It's counter intuitive, I know.
My problem now is always how to get the heat out efficiently while riding, so that I don't perspire excessively. Having the right gear makes riding reasonably comfortable down to about 20F. Below that, I notice the heat loss in my extremities.
Anyway, my thoughts...

I'm more sensitive to everything as I get older.
Well, except my hearing and eyesight.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

I'm having a hard time determining whether I'm more cold-sensitive, or this has just been a really nasty winter.
