Shock for which I'm not prepared...my 20-year old youngest daughter is engaged to be married next Spring. We're in VA, the wedding will be in TX, he's in CO. The young man has known her 10 months, we met him on an extended visit in May. Met him first last Fall while visiting her at school. In June, he asked to speak with me privately over the phone to seek my blessing. After talking again with him, I had no objections. So...

I did take him out on a stout MTB ride in May, which told me that he's game, at least...

Lots of emotions and plans/thoughts in the works now. How've you others handled this?

Get him a road bike as a wedding present.

Great thought...

I need to add that I'm paying for a wedding/reception in Waco, TX, and another reception in the Washington, DC area for local/church family. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to afford a
Varsity after next Spring.

The good news is that we got one through college in 2012. This one ^ is done in 2015...

Seems to me with a 20 year old daughter your job is to be supportive of her, no matter what.
Enjoy the wedding, smile a lot.

My 8 years older brother and his wife visited unexpectedly recently. Uexpected as I've seen him only once since our father died in 1997. When we were both quite a bit younger we were on occasion mistaken (much to my chagrin) for twins. What was scary was that I looked at him now and couldn't help but think "thats what I'll look like in 8 years?" I tell you it scared 8 years worth of growth right out of me so that's what I look like now!

Article: Keys to Preventing Alzheimer's Disease ( https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...sease/2554843/ )

Nice summary of current findings from this week's Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Boston. Most of the regulars here at the 50+ sub-forum will be familiar with these recommendations, but it is nice to see the body of evidence for them growing with each passing year.

OK, since I'm drunk, I'll ask my stupid question:

Why is the road biking forum called "41" and why is this one called "51?"

But I'm not drunk enough to ask my question about helmet mirrors and the TdF.

I was going to ask the same thing myself. Until we get an answer, ponder the magnificence of this new product:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...ycle-work.html

Edit to add: Kind of a travesty putting this in Pub51, eh? After all, this is bike related by any standard.

It's based on the forum's URL:

Road cycling forum:

...bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php/41-Road-Cycling..

Hence - 'the 41'.

Similarly, the racing forim goes by 'the 33', because that's part of the forum's URL.

But the Fifty+ forum:

...bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php/220-Fifty-Plus

So we should be called "the 220"

I often wonder about that. I get that mirrors look 'dorky', so I use bar-end mirrors - which don't look quite as bad. I use them extensively in group rides - and the faster the ride, the more I need them.

Bar-end mirrors are dorkier than helmet/glasses mirrors!

It could be worse - motorcycle mirrors!

I can't use any sort of handlebar-mounted mirror since I move my hands around to alleviate the 'tingles' that I get if I ride too long in one position, so I ride on the top, forward curve or drops. Not to mention that I have bar-end shifters... So it is either glasses-mounted mirror or helmet-mounted mirror for me.

I have received an unwelcome sign of my maturing 50+ness. The first hair of many has sprouted from my left ear. I can now look forward to the day when my ears are hairier than my goatee... Sigh.

Speaking of visual feedback loops, I'm reminded of my college days, having fun aiming a video camera (before the days of even personal video recorders, when there were even still vacuum tubes here and there still in use) at a monitor, and watching the "trippy" infinite regression image that resulted.

One of each side would help him with helmet balance.
