I bet you're not this stupid
I made some adjustments to my bike on Friday to get ready for Saturday's ride. Pulled an allen wrench out of my saddle bag to tighten the headset and replace the bottle cage (love the new one as the water bottle no longer rattles).
Saturday I'm descending a steep road after riding for a number of miles including a steep 4.5 mile climb when something hits my heel. I'm thinking......that was strange.......more thinking.........did something fall out of my jersey pockets. I reach back and everything is there.
Then I ask myself. "Did you zip back up the saddle bag after you removed the wrench yesterday and then put the wrench back in your tool box??" So I immediately stopped and stupid me had left it unzipped.
Not sure if it was a tire wrench or a CO2 cartridge but at least it wasn't my riders id and mad money and other stuff stashed in my bag...............
One other time I did that my car key and $20 fell out on the road. Talking about panicky........

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt, poster and CD, Now I make darn sure I check the bag for my house key, tire tools, inflator and spare cartridges/tube and that both zippers are all the way up and the attachment strap is tightened down. I stopped putting my money and ID in the bag and keep them in my jersey pocket now. Live and learn (the hard way.)

Yes to the RoadID bracelet, I got one when I was diagnosed with the CRF and I wear it all the time.

Carbon Road Frameitis? The only cure is a classic steel framed bike, say a 72-78 Bottecchia Giro d'Italia with a complete Campy NR grouppo, I'll get the Rx filled as soon as possible.

I lost a polo shirt and a glove. Another time I lost a blinkie on it's first ride. At different times I've left my saddle bag, pannier, and backpack open.
I also forget things when heading to work - lunch, keys, badge, drinks, glasses, and more.

I was golfing had taken my usual 3 balls out of the bag and forgot to zip it back up. Hit a good drive, jumped in the cart, hit the gas and started dumping 2 dozen golf balls down the path. It was the Starter and the next foursome laughing and shouting at me that stopped me. I had an embarrassing "Easter Egg hunt" in front of an audience.

I recently lost my wallet. Cancelled my cards, went to DMV got a new license then found my wallet in my jacket. I'd checked it twice already but it was in the upper pocket area. Killed me.

Man, thanks for all the info you guys share on this board. I have been riding bikes since the 60's. But I have to say I have learned a lot in my short time here at bikeforums. I had never heard of the RoadID and since I am in need on a replacement medical alert wristband, I just ordered a RoadID interactive. Now I can edit the info online when one of my docs changes my meds...

Non bike related, but a couple of decades ago I woke up with a terrible hangover. I realised I needed something to eat, so started to collect all the necessary stuff for a quick grocery run. Bike keys, home keys, pannier - check. Wallet - no check. Actually, no friggin' idea where my wallet was, except that I must've paid for the taxi ride home that night with my CC. Must have left it in the cab then. The receipt (that would ID the car and driver) would be in the wallet too. Not good.
So I picked up my phone and made the call of shame, or so I tought, to the taxi authority to ask if one of their drivers had reported a found wallet last night. I had taken a cab from the busiest taxi stand in the city, at peak hour when restaurants close, and all I could remember was the car was black, maybe, and possibly sedan. The description only fits about 85% of all the taxi cars in the city. Taxi authority guy sighed and told me he'd see what he can do.
My next task would be to close all my cards poste haste. Before making that call, I needed a sip from a bottle of Coke in my otherwise empty fridge. Just as I grabbed the fridge handle, I had a flashback from last night: myself standing in that very same spot, well and truly wasted, holding the fridge handle in one hand and wallet in the other, wondering how am I supposed to pour myself a quick glass of soda with no free hands...
The wallet was right there in the fridge, next to the Coke bottle. The REAL call of shame followed, as I called the taxi authority again to cancel the search, hoping he would not ask me why. He did. I explained. He was still laughing when I hung up.

On my new bike about 20 years ago, it came with the requisite front reflector. It was mounted on the headset. So the night before its maiden voyage, I remove the mount...and neglected to tighten up the head set. So on the next day's ride, the headset was, well, not doing well. Lesson learned.

My favorite thing to do when I take the bike someplace for an outing is to set something on the roof of my car "just for a minute" while I load up. Occasionally I hear it clunk when I take off and see it in the rear view mirror as it drops off, but I did lose a favorite pair of gloves that way. Now I make a point never to set anything someplace where I'll regret it if I forget about it, which in my case is inevitable.
