Every time this thread title pops up in my unread-subscriptions list I see it as
"What do old people see in your bikes?"
And then I think, oh wait, I are a old people. We all am old people eventually, if we make it long enough.

I'm jealous of all your water bottle storage! On my longest ride so far (12 miles, lots of hills so it was hard work for me) I drank all my water & had to stop to refill my bottle at a bar we biked past. I've been debating getting a rack for the back so I'll have somewhere to store more bottles, vs maybe getting a Camelbak but I'm not sure I want to wear something on my body because I get warm easily. So far I just have one handlebar bag where I keep maps, a small purse & my phone. Decisions, decisions...

Notabikerchick, I am with you on not wearing a Camelbak, I do use their Podium bottles, however, maybe one of the tri set ups for triathlons that go on the back of the seat would be an option for you. There are many options and some of the knowledgeable people here will certainly let you know about them.

I just built this one. Specialized AWOL Comp frame, Record Ti 10, BB7 discs on White hubs. While the frame is technically a 29er, I went with 700Cx32s, because I spend 95% of my time on pavement. The bike is kind of like Anne Hathaway, it takes a couple of beers to get used to it. I'm taking it for a short three day spin, then I'll be able to decide if I like it or not. Its a heavy sob, that much I do know. I had the exact group on my Merlin for a tour in June. This frame and the brakes are painfully heavy.

This custom Merlin from '98 is why I built the AWOL. The seatpost rack just doesn't cut it if you want to camp. Its also a 53/39 which is kind of tough up long grades on my 60 yr old heart. Theres also a Co-Motion Speedster tandem with S&S couplers that's packed away until I can find a riding partner.

Thanks, SpinThrift. It's been a good choice for me. I am usually the oldest guy on my club rides (58) and I can keep up with all but the strongest riders, who are also much younger than me.

There are some incredibly beautiful bikes in this thread! After 28years, I went ahead and splurged on a 2013 closeout Trek Madone 5.2. Put about 300miles on in the first 11 days. I love having more gears! I rode a Tesch 101 for over 20 years, until a Toyota took it out. Last fall I found a used Schwinn Paramount frame and put all of my components on it. The frame dates from 1987, the Dura-Ace components are only a few years newer. Now it has new wheels with Dura-Ace 8 speed freehubs and Mavic CXP33 rims.

Man, Tesch, I sure hope that you are careful around low overhangs and such, say the clearance for the spans on a high rise bridge,:rolleyes: That is one seriously nicely built Paramount, I like your build choices!
