I wear a Headsweat cycling cap/headband/bandana under my helmet, mostly to absorb sweat and keep the top of my forehead from being burnt. It's like a skull cap, but with ties in the back to make it as snug as one would want, and with a terrycloth band on the front half to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I used to just wear headbands, but they got too wet with sweat and I got tired of carrying several spares on any ride more than a few hours. The bandana type seems to be good for about four or five hours. I need to get another one; I really like them. They come in colors, but basic white makes more sense when the sun is beating down.

I sometimes wear a traditional cycling cap under my helmet if it's cold or in rain so that brim helps shield my glasses.

Yes, I sometimes wear a cycling cap. It is usually on a whim or when there is a strong chance of rain. More often, in warm weather I wear HeadSweats. In the really cold winter weather I wear a balaclava.

Never off the bike! Except in close spatial and temporal proximity to actually riding with the cap.

in cooler months I carry a light sport hat in my rack trunk, so that when I go into a store I don't disgust the other patrons or shop owner. during warm months I switch out the hat for a small head towel allowing me to dry/groom a little and since the long pants are gone I carry baggy shorts to whip on an off where appropriate.

Traditional . . . not so much. I have a traditional cap from the Quack Cyclists which I wear before or after a Quack event (Knoxville Double Century) but otherwise I have HeadSweats in a variety of colors (have to match the jersey kit!) which provides the same functions but are a lot more comfortable.

When cycling, I always wear a helmet and a skull cap, which precludes wearing a regular cycling cap. Off the bike, I sometimes wear a cap (I do own a Campagnolo cap), but I usually wear something with a wide brim and better sun protection, such as a straw hat or a foldup Aussie hat.

It is good to have for rainy days.

I prefer having something under my helmet, a coolmax when the weather's above 50°F. I'll use a Headsweats visored cap with a road helmet or one of their shorties (prefer over the do rag style) with a visored helmet. I have a couple traditional cotton cycling caps, but find my sweat saturates them too much to wear in warmer weather. Never wear them off the bike, in general, the cap comes off when the helmet does unless there is sun glare issue.

Cycling cap under helmet, since the helmet is basically transparent to rain and it usually rains here.

Nahh - I will usually wear one of those skull caps or bandana thingies under a helmet for extra sun and bug protection but thats it. Personally I don't think thats exactly optional. My entire commute runs along a canal and during the summer there are literally clouds of bugs that you have to drive through - some of them the bloodsucking kind. Having a bunch of those go through the vents and start crawling around under your helmet while looking for a good place to have lunch (them, not me) is a sure way to ruin a perfectly good bike ride.

They make more sense for recumbent riders. I have a synthetic material one for warm weather, and a wool one for cold weather.

I'm sure it looks dopey. I ride bents. Nothing makes it worse.

Well, maybe the cap does.

When it's brutally hot, I flip the cap around and dump ice water on the bill so it drips down my neck and back. Very handy when the heat index is over 100.

Frequently Wear a Walz cap. Have several, a wool one with ear flaps for winter, plus a couple of synthetic ones. Wear them cycling with brim down in front to keep sun out of eyes or with brim up for more visibility. If it rains, wear brim to the rear to reduce rain down my neck. Wear one under my winter parka as a thermal barrier. If the ice goes out in a couple weeks, will wear one fly fishing to help keep bugs out of my hair. Often wear a cycling cap, cycling or not.

Wore cycling caps under a helmet for a long time - favorite was a Goretex cap. Have since graduated to Headsweats most of the time, whether hot or relatively cold.

Something like this when it's cold and it fits under one of my helmets when I ride with it in Washington state. Just a sweatband the rest of the year.
