Family tragedy revisited, 28 years later.

The subject of the story, George Dalgity, was her first cousin, struck and killed on his bike in 1985. I met him only once when we were in Edinburgh in 1979.
The driver who struck him down has struck again, this time killing a senior citizen on a bicycle. The family outrage is over the light slap on the wrist the driver received.

I can understand the outrage from the families of both of the cyclists.
Maybe unrelated, I find the legal system interesting in that the "Sheriff" is the one doing the sentencing, unless the meaning of that post is quite different from what we have in the U.S. Here, of course, it would be decided by a judge (or jury), and there would be additional recourse through "wrongful death" lawsuits, etc.

Dan--Assure your family that they are not the only ones enraged at the leniency of the sentence. Many clubs and individuals have voiced their views to the Court and the Sheriff and it is not complimentary.

In VA, lawsuits consider the responsibility percentage of the injured. For instance, if you slipped and fell in a store, but there was a sign warning you of a wet, slippery floor, you bear some of the responsibility of the injury and your reward may be diminished or the lawsuit thrown out(always cross at a crosswalk if possible in VA). But this is not what's going on here. Even if she were wearing a helmet, the nutter HIT her.
