I recently spent two weeks in New Orleans for the annual Jazz Festival. In anticipation of the trip I asked a friend who lives there to give me some tips on the best places to rent a bike. He suggested we look on Craig's list thinking we might get one cheaper than renting for 2 weeks. He was right, we landed an older Huffy 18 spd. for just $70.00.Left it in his garage to be used when I go back or for others to use.

The bike was great for the daily 10 to 15 miles we were riding. I much enjoyed the flat, wide boulevards. Used the bike to bike into the Quarter a couple of times and several trips through City Park and along Bayou St. John. A delightful couple of weeks of easy biking, good food and music with friends. Craig's ist definitely was the way to go.

Great way for a longer stay with the added advantage of not much cost if it gets "Borrowed".

Excellent deal that's already paid for itself in savings. Wish I were there for the festival.

Lots of big names this year, Billy Joel, Black Keys, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayer, Willie Nelson and more. I stuck with more local acts this year, Bonarama, John Fohl, John Boutte, Anders Osborne, Marcia Ball, Los Hombres Calientes, and the incomparable Amanda Shaw. Incredible couple of weekends.

Sounds like a great time was had. Even just John Fohl and John Mayer would be worth the trip alone. I'll bet you got to eat well down there too.

I used to live a few blocks from the Fair Grounds where the Jazz festival is held; heck I went to one of the very first jazz fests. It was great being able to walk there. You certainly don't want to drive there so a bike makes a lot of sense. The city has pretty good bike riding but the drivers in NO are bad and the roads poor.

I lived in Biloxi, Missiissippi for 10 years or so and made it into New Orleans now and again. That city has a certain something. It is nearly impossible to find bad food. Even street food is very good.

Lets see, I remember incredible crawfish étouffée, fried chicken, quail pheasant and andouille gumbo, muffulletas , ribs, brisket, crawfish Monica, fried pork chop sandwiches, oyster PO boys, raw oysters, broiled oysters, etc, etc i need to keep riding and lose some pounds!

+1, the drivers think they ALWAYS have the right of way, even over pedestrians. But some beautiful areas to bike but you are correct many of the roads suck in terms of their condition.

I'll bet even the street vendors are good....like berner said. I ate largely off street vendors in Bangkok for awhile and the Thai ones were good (as opposed to the Chinese ones which were mostly noodle dishes). Red curries, green curries, mussels curries on rice cooked in coconut milk, crab cakes and custard cakes....good stuff.

Now would I venture out on a bike in Bangkok traffic? NO Way

I'm just gonna hafta make it down there for the Jazz fest when I retire and have the spare time someday.
