50+ Fashion Show and Review

In honor of the most recent delivery of new 50+ apparel, here's a new thread to display/discuss your new threads. I will begin with my new 50+ wind vest. If you did not order one... well it's a shame. It's about the most versatile thing you can have besides a multi-tool.

My size XXL fits a little more snugly than some of my other vests but it should work just fine in most situations provided it isn't used over bulky clothing.

The 50+ logos on the shoulders are a very nice touch and the collar zips up nice and high to keep out the wind.
Front is windproof nylon stuff but backside is a mesh to vent the heat produced by my massive wattage.

Unlike some other vests, the zipper on the back is not a pocket, it's a pass through to allow access to to jersey pockets. I think I will like that because six pockets tends to lead to chaos when trying to reach back and find stuff. Three pockets ought to be enough.

I have always liked the placement of the "dulcius ex asperis" slogan on the collar but cannot find a "HTFU" imprint anywhere on the vest. Oh, well....

Zipper on the front does not open from the bottom.

It is gray and blustery here today so a test ride is in order.... more later. Feel free to post pics and reviews of your newly arrived 50+ clothing here.

What a great description.
The zipper SHOULD open all the way.

i like the sung vest, and find my wind jacket a bit too loose. I'm considering finding someone who can tighten up the sleeves and overall jacket.

That very light almost invisible "HTFU" appears on the NorCal clothes collars, we get the "through suffering, bliss" latin.

Curt,

Yeah, I figured out the Htfu thing. I have one of the NorCal jerseys and got confused. As to the zipper: it works fine. But I have some jackets and vests that have a zipper that will open from the bottom for ventilation once you have them zipped up. Voler and Garneau are that way. It's not intended as a criticism... I really like the ChampSys stuff. Agree that you don't want the vest floppy... Mine should be just fine.

Thanks for your good work.
Don

A fashion review should have a video walking up and down a runway, with your best supermodel studly-strut, to the sound of a driving beat and clicking cameras!

Wellllll now, David, I've had front row seats to this show for hours now, and the only one bold (read: manly) enough to post some photos has been OP Billydon. Now you're asking for catwalk?!?!

Speaking of bicycling fashion shows, the local organization here in Boston, Mass Bike, is holding a swanky Bike Night!: From the Bikeway to the Runway on Friday, June 7. The description is:

The Westin has graciously provided us with a beautiful venue that is not only perfectly designed for the fashion show, but also boasts exquisite views of the Boston Harbor. The night will begin at 6:30 with a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and drinks. The libations will be provided by Bacardi, Grey Goose, Ruffino, Robert Mondavi and Sam Adams...

After the cocktail hour, you will be invited into the dining room for a seated three-course dinner including salad, entrée, and dessert. Entrées will include a chicken, beef, or vegetarian option. Dinner will conclude around 8:30 and then the night’s entertainment will commence.

The fashion show will follow dinner and exhibit clothing that highlights bicycling as a practical, fun, stylish transportation option for all types of people. Check out our list of sponsors who will have some of their most sought-after cycling accessories and apparel modeled for the runway show. Items showcased in the fashion show include Pearl Izumi, Primal Wear, Hincapie Sportswear, Craft, Club Ride Apparel, Bern Helmets, DeFeet, Sweet Spot Skirts and many more! Don’t forget to purchase tickets for the raffle to win amazing prizes from our numerous partners...
I mention this event to the Fifty Plus Forum because this same festive organization is sponsoring their annual Summer Century and Family Ride for July 27, and this has been proposed as venue for a Fifth Annual Fifty Plus Ride.

Seriously, I am glad to see your reminders posted. It would be wonderful to have a large turnout in Boston this summer, JULY 27-28.

I had to look that up! "Sweeter after difficulties?" Love it.

Latin sure has a way with otherwise simple statements of truth, eh?

Here's a suggestion for the next round. On the shorts and bibs, "Numquam ubi sub ubi"

Reviewing the New 50+ Summer Jersey

Wore my new summerweight 50+ jersey for the first time today. The fabric is thinner and seems a bit stretchier and the normal jersey. It's called "CS Tech Mesh".

The texture feels a little bit like, well, lingerie.... so a ride can now be an even more sensual experience. If you are prone to distractions in this area a base layer might be a good idea.

From a distance the jersey looks pretty much the same as the normal 50+ model and the prints and logos look just as good.

Here are a few shots on a live model:

In this final shot I'm trying to show off my Sock Guy Crash Test Dummy socks... not sure the orange works with the jersey, but WTH, why be a slave to fashion?

I rode semi-briskly today in fairly warm conditions and the heat exchange does seem to be better than the normal jersey fabric, even with bibs and a thin baselayer. I'm glad I've got one of these since I am not a heat lover. Thanks to Brother Curtis for pointing out this option.

Verdict:

Too bad my kit didn't arrive in time for my 50k ride yesterday, but it was waiting for me in the mail box last night. It's a rainy day today, and I don't have time for a proper ride anyway, so the test ride will have to wait, but meantime, I've tried it on and it feels fantastic.
I have no idea why I waited until now to try bibs, they feel great.
I'll model it for you now.
Geez, I wish that timer would hurry up, can't hold the gut in much longer.

MAMILs all.

You know, it's stuff like this that gets us into trouble, especially with any woman on the entire planet under 30.

What do we care?

I am frolicsome and I am easy, good tempered and free
And I don't give a single pin me boys
what the world thinks of me

Carry on.

Elderly? Speak for yourself, Bucko! (Still waiting for those pics of the new bibs, BTW!)

And, getting back OT, I rode in the summerweight jersey again yesterday and I LOVE the way it vents! Warm climate residents take note for your next order from Corlew Enterprises.

I think you should keep the straps down look with your bibs, that is very radical and has that bit of rebellious old fart thing going. Kind of a southwest Alabama chic you might say.

That is a new Apres Velo look I am cultivating. Dashing, no? (Would not want to be thought of as "dorky" my lycra.)

(Seriously, you would be a candidate for the summerweight jersey, I would think.)

I thought it was just one strap hanging down, or is that just a south-east Alabama chic thing. Wait a minute. Is that a banjo I hear? Gotta go now.

Après velo, the straps down look is like catnip to women!

And it's not southern, but Euro!

I didn't know that catnip induced uncontrollable laughter.

Seriously. When I occasionally wear bibs I get the "point and laugh" response out of the family. This from a kid that wears his pants around his ankles and pink tennis shoes. Oy.

I don't have a 50+ jersey, but here is a reasonable facsimile ... pondering a descent down Latigo:
