Thanks and Rest in Peace, SPC. Chris Behm, USA, GYSGT John Storm, USMC, SFC John Hawkins (all in combat in Vietnam) and 1LT Dustin Storm, USMCR (MCAS Yuma, AZ, aircraft crash) for paying the ultimate price. Friends and fathers of friends.

Yes - good thread. I got out (August, 1965) just before Vietnam heated up, but had a classmate or two make the sacrifice in Vietnam.

Next to my SS# the other official "government" numbers I still have in my memory and can recall instantly are my enlisted and officer ID numbers. That was 51 years ago that I got those. Strange. Haven't used them since 1965.

BTW, Princess Cruises gives up to an extra $250 on-board credit to veterans if you fill out the form and give them a copy of your DD214. Now I know why I saved that paperwork for the last 50 years!!

Duty, Honor, Country. What drove us even before we could put it into clear words.

This year, for some reason the first of my friends to die is strongly on my mind. Like so many, he bought it in a training accident. Our country has depended on people like him for it's existence. I'm proud to have known him and others like him.

Funny that! Can't remember birthdays, but still remember that silly number.

Thank you all, who served. And thank you, the honored few who gave it all.

I wish him good luck. Maxwell's a good base - I was stationed there in 1977. I hope he's ready for a little southern heat and humidity.

On another note, I didn't realize that the USAF had moved OTS from Lackland (San Antonio TX) to Maxwell (Montgomery AL). Maxwell is the home of the Air War College and has hosted training for years so it's a good location. Not that it matters...the weather is similar in both locations and he won't see much of any "town" for at least six weeks anyway!

Me too. Wasn't active that long for medical reason but managed to be Soldier of the Month (April 1969) at Fort Jackson.

Yep, somehow the sargeant in basic training convinced me that my well being depended on me remembering that number. I too can recall it instantly, whereas I have to think about birthdays and phone numbers.

9 years of active duty, 4 additional reserve years. The people I know who died had freaky things happen to them. One anesthesiologist I knew died in Desert Storm when he hopped in a jeep to ride to a satellite phone so he could call his wife. Flipped the jeep and did not survive. Another I was aware of but did not personally know was joy riding and rode over a land mine. Ouch.

4 MDs were killed in Desert Storm. No idea what the stats are for the 2000s. Another reservist friend of mine got used to having mortar shells lobbed at his compound. Says the guy was a lousy shot and never hit anything.

Still, I'm grateful I didn't have so much as a paintball gun aimed at me the entire time.

I was there yesterday for the Olympic. She looks like one of those women who "chicked" me.

While it's a pretty picture, and was really eye catching, each of those 6600+ flags is meant to represent someone who has died in Iraq or Afghanistan.


In observance of Memorial Day and to honor those who have fallen while serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan, some 6,500 flags will be on display, each with a personalized identification card representing deceased service members, throughout the weekend at the Palmer Events Center in conjunction with the CapTexTri Health and Fitness.

And, not to make too fine a point, but Memorial Day is to honor those who died in service. Veteran's Day is later in the year. In my mind, they are two very distinct things, cause I didn't die.
