Nephew & 2 College friends/mates are riding the USA East Coast

Starting around June 3rd my nephew Josh and two friends(Will and Peter) from college decided to ride the East Coast starting from Maine and ending in the Keys. They actually are getting college credit for this adventure. Also, they've not been on bikes much and definitely have not done distance riding. A few days ago, they arrived at his paternal grandparent's house in Smithfield VA. Josh, Will, and Peter, Josh's parent's and sister, his dad's mom and her husband, his maternal grandparents, some family friends, and me and my wife all met up at Golden Corral in Newport News, VA(No, they didn't ride bikes to Golden Corral.). I became a hero by arranging that they bring their bikes into my LBS on the 3rd of the July so that they could be tweaked(Figured it would be late Friday before they got the bikes, but my LBS fixed their bikes while they waited even after the bikes didn't arrive until late afternoon--my LBS is great.).

So, we're eating dinner and the guys are consuming mass quantities when, after talking about my biking and theirs, they said I should join them when they start up again Saturday the 6th. Anyway, I rode with the guys for about 30 miles(to near the VA/NC boarder), wished them good luck, and then returned back to the starting point, his paternal grandparent's house, where my car was.

Some adventure about my ride with them: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...1#post15821483

Their blog, so far, about their trip(I'm Uncle Mike): http://brobreak.wordpress.com/

A pic of us all before we got started. (My nephew is the one in the regular shirt.)

What a cool adventure. They will remember this trip for the the rest of their lives. I went cross-country in 1995 and it is still fresh in my mind, as if it only happened a couple years ago. I learned so much, not only about the places I went through and the people I met ... but about myself also. You will be amazed at the maturity your nephew has gained after this trip. Thanks for the neat story.

Josh's father and his uncle, dad's brother, road from coast-to-coast when his dad was in college. I was touched that they wanted me to come and ride along with them.

That's maturity. You have every right to be proud of these young men. They are tomorrow's "pillars of society".

Waiting to see where they are now, but they did make it to one of the boy's relatives in NC. The day I rode with them, they actually did 87 miles, but a good hunk of that was going on out-of-the-way routes. The next day they did 50 miles to get to one of the boy's Aunt & Uncle's place in NC.

Hey Mikey, who is the handsome, young looking guy, 2nd from the left, in the Tour de Cure Red Rider Jersey?

Good on your nephew and his friends, that is quite an undertaking of a ride, hope the winds and the weather favor them for the trip. Watch out along the Southern Atlantic coast this weekend, T.S. Chantal is supposed to run along Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina then.

Not sure. People say it's me though. I still find it amazing to see myself now after being obese for so many years, about 2 decades, or overweight since later 20s. Funny about the Jersey--a lot of the roads we were riding was the route I rode during the TdC.

They keep a good eye on the forecasts. All have phones and one has an Ipad with GPS.

According to the NWS T.S. Chantal has pretty much played out so they shold be good other than the usual off the Atlantic summer stuff. Best wishes on their trip, it is commendable for them doing this.

That's awesome. Sometimes I wish I was 30 and retired so I could do things like this. Not sure I want to attempt something like this at 66.
