Small Strava Sample Size 65+

While I don't pay any attention to Strava segments before a ride, I do like to look at the results to see how my ride stacks up against previous efforts. I also like to take a peek at the 65+ (and 200 lb +) statistics. Usually, I'm mid-pack on the climbs, but the number of riders in 65+ gets pretty slim even on popular segments making it difficult to see where you "stand". Now, I'm not racing, but I still have some competitive juice left. I'm wondering if any others in my demographic are finding the same thing? It would be interesting to know the size of the folks ahead of us, but unfortunately you can tell the weight classification of the folks on Strava.

FWIW my typical longer ride is 30-40 miles, 50 ft/mi climb, 16 mph average. I've gone as fast as 18 mph on a frequently-ridden, hille, 30 mi. course, but at an effort that I would have described in my running days as "race pace". I'm not feeling particularly self limited, but if there were more information on Strava I'd have a better sense of the ceiling.

So here's a typical ride:Cienega Loop

and a not so typical, tougher ride: Henry Coe

Yeah... the 65+ group is often N=1 around here. It may mean that older riders don't use GPS/Strava much, or whatever. Nothing to do but compare with a younger group. There's some real fast 200 pounders in Omaha, but they're mostly 30 somethings.

I have the opposite problem. Here in North County San Diego, there are so many ex and current racers in the 65+ group that many segments have over 100 people in them, and their speeds are insane. What I need is a 65+ Clydesdale segment, where I might stand a chance!

Yep - I wish Strava let you select both age and weight brackets! I might have 20 65+ riders on a popular climbing segment with several hundred in the total population. I'm retiring soon, but I'm going to stay put; my wife and I looked at San Diego several years ago, but as you move away from the coast it looks none too attractive (to use). We live in a weather paradise micro climate and I just don't see moving.

I can certainly understand that, as we pay a "sunshine tax" here. But talk about a weather paradise micro climate -- this is it! And to be able to ride in the mountains and along the ocean in a single ride is pretty amazing.
