650-B's on a High End Climber
We just finished our annual Wisconsin trip (maybe more details in some other postings). This year was all southwest WI and northwest IL with LOADs of climbing (including one day from Galena to Prairie Du Chien over 8500 ft total climb).
Worrying about my heavier bikes being a problem for me, I decided to take the 04 Trek 5900 Superlight and fit it with 650 B rims on Chris King hubs and Grand Bois 32 tires. LOVED IT.
I had tried fitting 700x25 gatorskins and the clearance was less than 2mm at the top of the fork and seat stay bridges. I didn't want some tar-stone to stick to the tire and jam into the gap so I went with the above configuration. 32 was the max width I could fit but the top clearance was fine. I did lose some braking efficiency (obviously had to extend the brakes) which is a big deal going down huge grades that "T" at the bottom. We had several.
I intend to keep it set up this way. The Grand Bois tires were so comfortable over all the various conditions we faced (expansion joints, choppy roads, gravel, tar-stone, tractor paths, etc). I've become a confirmed fan.
