Well, I know the farmer on it actually, he is really nice, very considerate to cyclist and drivers alike. He was moving it to another field when I came up on him. I thought it sounded like a fun topic for the weekend. Rowan, I wouldn't want to be on that tractor, either. Len and NOS, you guys got me, I do a double HGH along with my EPO and a blood bag every night.

This is my favorite jersey:

I wear it all the time. It seems to throw off motorists, as the advertisers all deal in autos, tractors, and heavy equipment. I especially like the Cat on the sleeves.

We all have our place. On a narrow road I sensed motorists swearing at me as they tried to pass me. I then encountered a tractor towing a flatbed full of hay. I had the pleasure of muttering "Get it off the road, will you?" As I passed it.

The I glanced back and gave it: the look.

Addendum: just pulled up the team roster for 2008. Soler, Impey, Hunter, and Chris Froome. Not too shabby.

We poseurs don't need no steekin' EPO... I dialed it up to 40 watts this morning to send a flock of peacocks scurrying across the road. Oh the humanity...

Enough ellipses for one post, that is my story and I am using it as my big fish story for the week, a pass uphill is a pass in my limited book.

Good on you Bill.

I passed a tractor last week. The guy was cutting the grass (and weeds) along the Suncoast Trail.
Sorry, no pics.

A rear bearing and seal for the drive shaft to the front wheels decided it had had enough. It was repaired (under warranty, no less), but the job wasn't done properly, and the seal gave way again twice.

Oddly, no-one asked me what speed I was doing at the time, and I didn't offer up the information. And apparently, the bearing and seal failure had happened once before on that model.

I've concluded that tractors are designed for slow, heavy-duty work...

Oh I made the mistake, when I was about 14, of putting a row crop Farmall in neutral going down a long steep hill on a service road by the freeway and realized the brakes grabbed too much to try and use them. I couldn't tell you how fast I was going but I was keeping up with the traffic on the more level freeway. I peed in my pants a little bit.

When working on a paving crew my boss got the bright idea to road some 25 ton pneumatic rollers to another job-sight and those guys had a hairy downhill ride and a couple of busted connecting rods to boot.

luv this story btw

It all reminds me of a quote I saw in a tractor magazine long ago. They were driving some "vintage" tractors from place to place, and these tractors did NOT have a road gear. So the quote was that the tractors would "pass everything that was standing still. Except for a gas station!"

I live near you and see the big tractors out on the road all the time over here in farming country. No way can I keep up with them, they run 30+.

Hey Tom, good to see you here, yes, some of the bigger rigs can turn some serious speed with their transit gear range. The farmer was just moving up the road a bit to mow some hay, that is the only way I could catch and pass him, or anyone for that matter.

In my area we routinely feature bike vs tractor events. Here is a photo from the warm-up zone:

Tractors are big and big-time in France. It is not unusual for a tractor to go tearing past us on bikes in even quite large towns.

As can be gathered from the TdF telecasts, the French countryside is very agricultural. Usually, the tractors are pulling a trailer of some sort and are mingling with the ordinary traffic.

I fear for a crash however... the trailers always seem to be for liquid manure!

I wonder why drivers don't get road rage over a tractor taking the lane, but if it's a cyclist in spandex...

If I could just project an image like this behind me...
