Every dog I've ever owned has been taught where/when not to bark. Inside a vehicle is one of the first places my dogs have learned not to bark. It's an enclosed space and the dogs barking might startle the driver - not a good thing. I must also say that teaching a dog not to bark is one of the more challenging things from my perspective.

A couple of months ago I was riding on lightly-traveled road. The sun was in my eyes a little so I was looking down as I road and I heard a thud. When I looked up I saw a dog who decided to jump out of the bed of a moving pickup truck and chase me. It didn't work out like he planned because he hit the ground like a bag of dirt.

+1

It confuses the dog, and sometimes it encourages them so much that the window will spontaneously roll up.

We have a Aussie who insists on barking when excited, like when on the way to the park , door bell. My wife thought it OK and refused to make corrections. Now we have a a 120 lb German Shepard who has been taught by the Aussie the same BAD behavior. Suddenly it's not OK. You can imagine the discussions fueled by the drama.

One time 15 years ago or so, a particulary nasty dog was barking at me from the open bed of a pickup truck as it passed. The dog barked at the other cars, too. The driver stopped at a light a block ahead of me and the dog leapt out and took off down a side street unnoticed by the driver. The light changed and the truck sped off. Dog-gone!

a) I thought it inadvisable to let a dog have its head out of a car window at speed in case some flying object, like an insect or gravel should hit it in the eye. Isn't that commonsense?
b) yes, plenty of times the local cretins in pickups allow their dogs to bark as they pass.

On the BRIGHT SIDE- no one is going to be coming thru your windows-
Not with that echoing big dog bark rumbling amid the "I can hardly wait to nip you" Aussie bark
Australian shepard bit/NIPPED) me on the butt-(yeah a dog-multicolored patch work quilt dog-right on the butt-drew blood-big bruise)
so both those dogs would give me pause if I was a burgular.Might distract the 120 lbs one with a steak-but the Aussie,hmmm-
it would eat the steak and STILL NIP ME- herding dogs-pretty determined

Your right, the window, front door, over the fence, the Aussie has a attitude , and the GSD backs him up as well as detesting strangers. The good news is they stay in the yard, don't chase down cyclists, kids , dogs on leashes etc. Amazingly they don't bark in the front yard where I have them trained.

You forgot a couple of things that could hit the dog in the face, a water bottle and a frame pump being among them I don't like hurting an animal, but if said animal is about to take a chunk out of me, I will defend myself. The dog would be likely to have me grab the water bottle and give it a good squeeze, giving them a blast of cold water in the face..... If your in the United States though, where there are more guns then people, a dog could get shot instead.

Well, presumably the vehicle would be travelling too fast for the dog to grab you, but when a dog is chasing along the ground, the water bottle squirt is a good start toward fending it off.

If you squirt into some redneck's beloved truck, then you run the risk of getting shot! Stand your ground and all that bull poop!

I get this about once a month. It just startles me. It is a little like lane splitting motorcyclists in CA with loud pipes in slow freeway traffic blasting by. I am more concerned by large dogs in the country whose owners allow them to run loose. Although disconcerting, it is great sprint practice hammering for life and limb!

I have to assume the driver is encouraging this, or why else would the passenger window be open 10-12 inches when the temp is 25 degrees? The last dog was fairly close to me, and I'm hoping not to be the victim of a drive-by biting.

Anyone else experience something like this?
I bark back and carry a lead filled sap.
