Liar

Were you ever less than truthful about the cost of a new bike with your spouse? I've been socking away a couple of hundred a week for a while now to finance my new bike purchase. Even though my wife wouldn't care about the $3-$4k I'm about to spend (she would tell me to spend whatever I want) I feel almost guilty telling her the final price. I have the urge to tell her it's closer to $2k. Funny, I know, but it's how I feel. Anyone else?

No point in lying to the one that keeps track of the finances. She could take it all and leave for Mexico tomorrow and I'd be utterly clueless.

Besides, she knows I'm an inverterate cheapskate ... and if I saw fit to spend X$ on a bike it was for good reason.

Nope. Most of my bike money comes from flipping bikes or doing some work on a friend of neighbor's bike. Sometimes I'll purchase stuff in the return bin at REI or Performance, knowing I can use it later or swap it for stuff I need or want. It's always cash and always kept in a place she has access to. If I don't have the bike money for something, I wait until I do. Or, I hint that a nice birthday gift would be.....

No, I don't inform her of my expanding bike collection. No tell, no lie.

I do, however, inform her of any bike I sell. I act like something has just been amputated.

The funny thing is my wife would never get angry at something like that, she pretty much has control of all the money. I guess I just feel as if I'm indulging myself too much. When we first got married money was really tight for the first few years and we kind of got accustomed to waiting for things. Now that our circumstances have drastically changed, I'm still kind of in that austerity mindset, lol.

If I were married I would be more upset about my spouse lying about the price than spending the money. It sounds like your wife doesn't care how much you spend, so why create a problem when there isn't one?

Agree with cbad rider, when she does find out its true price the price could be really high for you. And she will eventually find out. I wouldn't even attempt to think about this one, not worth the grief it would bring, 37 years isn't worth throwing away just for that. Fortunately Monica supports my riding and knows I will be honest and responsible.

Enjoy the new ride and have a clear conscience.

Bill

I used to, but am not good enough at it to get away with it, so she gets full price, including the $140 I just dropped an a new Brooks seat.

I'm always totally honest with my wife about what my bike stuff costs. We each have control of our own money and and we split the household expenses down the middle, hence, what I spend on bicycles and parts is all out of "my" money anyway, so no worries.

Plus, I work in the bike industry and other manufacturers give discounts to those of us in the industry (as we do for them) so my bicycle stuff doesn't cost "retail" anyway.

Funny story (kind of) . . . One time my wife was on a ride with her friends and had a tire get cut up from riding over something sharp (don't remember what) so she stopped by a local bike shop to get a new tire. When they quoted her the price she was stunned (being used to my bike industry discount). So, being resourceful, she told them who her husband was and promptly got the price reduced to "bike industry worker" level .

So no, to answer the OP . . . never an issue for me. Liar? Never!

If it was something I'd be embarrassed or guilty about, I'd rather just refrain from doing it than lie about it. Being untruthful about finances is potential trouble. Number one cause of discord in divorces in fact. Well maybe not literally number one, but in the top ten.

Never "lied" to my wife about bike purchases. She always tells me to get a good one or whatever I need.
When we bought my 2001 Litespeed in April 2001 (she went with me) she asked why I wasn't looking at the Litespeed Vortex. The price was ~$5000. I told her this was my first "serious" road bike (I'd only been riding my 1999 Raleigh R600 for a little over a year) and I wasn't ready for that much bike.
So I got the ~$3000 Litespeed Tuscany. Did I go wrong?

My wife doesn't have a problem with me spending money on my favourite pastime, but I do. I'm a cheapskate!

Perhaps if I spent megabucks on my bikes I might be more economical with the truth.

Well said; same here. When I was shopping for a new carbon fiber bike, I suggested spending about $4000, with the expectation of about $2-3K. She was OK with that, and I actually got a year-end $8K bike for $4K.

One consideration in talking about bike prices in general, is that non-cyclists might not be aware of, or be shocked at the price-value ratio of serious bicycles. There was a recent thread on that disconnect:

WPHamilton and NOS88 +1. Be truthfull. I believe it is cheaper to keep her. In emotional ways as well as $. When I was a teenybopper I let a girl break my heart. My trophy wife of 42 years is the one that showed up when I asked the Lord to send me a good one. I just hope I can be a good part of the bargain for her.

I'm going to choose between these

https://www.cannondale.com/catalog/pr.../category/916/

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ies/domane_5_2

When the weather gets a bit nicer here I'll test rides these, as well as maybe the CAAD 10 and the Bianchi , just cause it's so pretty

https://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/road...eloce-compact/

Not sure if I can bargain on these bikes, are bike prices negotiable?

Sorry, not sure , I haven't yet gone shopping for a new bike ; would imagine dealers have some wiggle room . Recommend taking a CAAD out for a test ride .

I've said this before - lots of people spend $25k, $30k, or even $40k for a car or SUV. I buy an inexpensive car once every 15 years or so - the last was a 2010 Honda Fit for about $16k. Nobody would be at all surprised or offended if I spent an extra $5k for a somewhat nicer car. So what's the big deal if I instead spend $5k for a pretty nice bike?
