Don't Lift That! You'l Get a Hernia!

Sage advice I ignored about a decade ago at a Girl Scout survival encampment.

And today, I gave surgery to a bouncing baby hernia. The surgeon is a cyclist himself and we spent a good 15 pre-surgery minutes trading crash stories. He's got better ones than mine!

Right now, no pain whatsoever, but I'm sure that will change. Doc says it'll be about 3 weeks before I should be riding again. Anyone else have similar experience?

I think I might use the downtime to do some long-overdue sagging.

Yep I use to motocross and from picking my bike up off the stand I ripped mine in my groin area. 30 days later back racing. But to this day if I lift to much I get sore and it's been about 14 years ago now.

Fortunately not! Enjoy the recovery time but I'm sure at some point before too long you'll be itching to ride some hills.

I hope the doctor warned you about the bruising - mine didn't. My unit looked so awful I thought it was gangrenous. I called the hospital to ask about it and they insisted that I return to let them check it out. Once there a bunch of (male) docs took a look and laughed at/with me. Funny, I have to admit. But what an irritating waste of time.

Glad I took my first pain pill before reading that!

Doin great except for one stupid thing. I was so stoked that I wasn't feeling any pain, I forgot to take the antibiotics! Took the first one this morning at 4AM thinking it was a pain pill. Oy.

Curious. Once years ago I asked a doctor about the supposed connection between lifting heavy objects and hernias. I wanted to be sure I didn't do some stupid male thing. He said no, that he didn't think he could even invent an exercise that would cause one, that they happened mostly because your body type was susceptible and that it was mostly hereditary.

Hope you feel, and look, better soon.

I had both abdominal and groin hernia repair March 10 Started going out for walks March 16 By the time I went in for my post opt
visit on March 26 I had walked 35 miles including one 7 mile walk. During that whole period I continued iceing many many times a day and yes my abdominal area looked like I lost a professional boxing match
On March 26 the dr told me it was ok to start bicycling and skiing but to continue to NOT lift over 20 lbs "the weight of a bicycle" for 4 more weeks. He did say start slowly and add additional time slowly.
So 16 days after surgery I was able to take a ride out of my driveway for 1/2 hr. Day 17-19 I skied green runs. day 20-21 I bicycled an hour. Day 22
I only rode 1/2 hr but I climbed my first hill (300' climb)

Well Victor, since you posted this on April 1st I'm not so sure we should take it seriously . . .

If it is (unfortunately) true, hope to see you sagging Karen's ride up the Crystal Lake Cafe this Saturday!

Aye, 'tis unfornately true. I'm padding around in hospital socks like Grandpa Simpson for the next few days.

The doc said no to anything this weekend, but next weekend is another matter!

Some lifters believe they injured themselves resulting in a hernia from doing too much too fast.

Well, let's put it this way. As of tonight, you saved me a trip to the hospital.

Bikeforums helps reduce the high cost of medical treatment ... who knew?

I have not had a hernia problem but have had multiple surgeries... this may be TMI but doctors fail to tell patients use of pain mediation causes severe constipation... I rather have pain than that... just saying....Milk of Mag will be your new best friend...

Oh, I was all up on that. I was Mr. Milk O' M until I was done with the painkillers. Which wasn't long, BTW. Only a day or so.

Right now, I'm at the dangerous phase where I'm back to work, and since there is no pain at all, it's easy to forget and overdo it.

Agreed, some NSAID's will shut your intestines down. I have a problem with alieve (naproxen). Relafen (Nabumetone) works better for me.

Well ... just had my first post-op appointment. I was originally told to expect to be off the bike for 3 weeks, and was hoping for two.

The doc looked at his handiwork and told me things are going better than typical, but to expect to stay off the bike until the end of the month.

Guess I'll be doing a lot more volunteering this year than usual.

That's somewhat good news, Vic. At least things are progressing well. Volunteering will build you some brownie points with the cycling community, enjoy the time and when you get to ride again it will be even sweeter. You're still on my prayer list for complete recovery, help well, my friend.
