Too bad there is an ugly fence around that beautiful sculpture.

I would think it's a pretty bicycle friendly place to ride. Nice

I did a quick search and found it's a memorial.

The Miles For Matt Foundation

[h=1]Dedication of Statue of Cyclist Matt Scarpati in Cedar Creek Park[/h] Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and New York State Senator Chuck Fuschillo attended the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the memory of Cyclist Matt Scarpati, 19, of Dix Hills who was killed by an impaired motorcyclist on the bike path outside of Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh. His family’s efforts and those of local officials led to the installation of a safety rail along the pathway leading to Jones Beach in an effort to save lives. The Sarpati family raised funds to erect this statue and with the help of Senator Fuschillo and County Executive Mangano created this memorial at the entrance to the bike path at Cedar Creek Park to remind cyclists, runners and all those that use the path to be vigilant and aware of possible dangers from motorists.

Sad that someone lost their life, a great way to remember him and remind others of the dangers out there.

+1 Nice art, but wish it was there without the loss of life behind it.

Beautiful work, a fitting memorial to that young man.

That's a very moving memorial and I really like the artistry. Certainly feel a sense of loss knowing why it's there.

Nice piece of metalwork -- thanks for sharing. One of my friends is a sculptor who works primarily in bronze.

Thanks for sharing. To echo other sentiments, to bad there was the loss of a life - but it is a great memorial.

Here in the Tucson (Arizona) area there are several memorials by the roadside for cyclists killed by cars.
They utilize a full bike, painted white, with a good size plaque stating who/when cyclist was killed.
A reminder to others that it could happen to them.

Pretty chilling when you look at the numbers killed.

They place a bike painted white and raise their bikes over their head in tribute to the fallen rider.

What a beautiful statue. A most fitting tribute. Is that was Matt looked like? Or is it just a generic cyclist.
