Stopping on a climb for a photo opportunity or just to take in a great view is not a bad habit. Outside of that, I do my best climbing when my rhythm and breathing are in synch. Stopping messes this up, not to mention the difficulty of starting on a steep incline.

I look at it from the other direction. If I'm dying and not sure if I'll make it or not, then for sure I have to keep going, just to prove I can. OTOH, if it's a grind but there's no question I'll make it, THEN I've got nothing to prove and have no problems stopping.

Although you could always hang the camera from your neck and take the picture while riding.

I actually don't think there is anything wrong with stopping. If it's a one-time climb with a beautiful vista, then I'd stop on a dime. On my recent organized ride I was concerned about getting home after the ride so didn't want to dawdle.

I do the going downhill and U-turn thing myself ... but there are times that isn't an option. At least with my crappy bike handling skills.
