Coming up on 50 years of marriage
July 3rd will be our 50th. I have been searching for a present (and have been receiving hints!!) that a present is most appropriate. I think I have found the perfect present. But I am not telling until after the celebration.
We will be celebrating with a lunch with dim sum and some friends. Then a cruise in October.
50 years is one heck of a long time. We are fortunate that, despite some serious medical problems - particularly my wife with continuous afternoon severe pain - we are both healthy enough to ride together, and will do so today, hopefully.
Have we had our challenges? You bet - two sons with profound disabilities. One physical, one severe developmental delays. Yet the son with the totally paralyzing - from the neck down (on his 21st birthday) - physical disability graduated as the president of his Stanford Law School class, married a Yale Law School graduate, and they are known across the country as the top lawyers in their field of civil rights legislation, and travel across the country on cases and giving presentations. They are on the boards of many prestigious organizations. A little plug here - their web page. They are older than some of you!
The son with the profound developmental disability lives in a Host Home with a family. We are always worried that any arrangements can fall apart at any moment - this worry just sits there in our minds.
There were times when we were so broke from medical bills that I worked 3 jobs, and we wouldn't answer the phone to avoid the bill collectors!!
So, how do we handle this never-ending tension?
Well, bicycling and other exercise, of course!! I (almost 75) swim, walk, lift weights and ride about 3,000 miles per year. Nora (almost 77) rides some and swims and does aquaerobics. We both walk. She and I sing a lot, giving various presentations with an a cappella group I started 9 years ago. It helps with the continuous worry, but it never truly goes away.
And, I know that many of you also have worries and tensions from all sorts of problems and concerns. And, I would posit that all research shows that exercise is THE single best stress reliever.
Keep at it!!

July 3, 1964, a truly fantastic day!
I know exactly where I was on that day. I was at Mary Greeley Memorial Hospital waiting for our first daughter to be born.
Congratulations to you and to Mrs. Fox.

Congratulations on the 50 years! Certainly an accomplishment to celebrate.
I don't think that it would be any surprise to learn that many of us on BF, while we love cycling, each struggle in life with our own challenges. So in that respect, you're not alone. As for being married for 50 years, there won't be many that will make that claim to fame. Again congratulations.

Congratulations Dnvrfox and spouse! That's fantastic. Truely inspiring in this day and age. Your will to live even in the face of personal health issues, challenged children, and the unfortunates with never having enough money to pay the medical bills reminds me of a man who was just here in Winnipeg this last week. He is termanilly ill with cancer and is biking around the world on donations. He calls it "the good will tour" Not to take from your accomplishments, but I wouild like to add a link to his page, because as you and your wife have found, exercise, and bicycling does the body good!

Well, as you know, we passed our 52 years of marriage earlier this month. Our hope for you and Nora is that you have many more anniversaries and never catch us.
We were given a pillow for our 50th, or maybe it was before that, my search algorithm isn't that swift any more. It says: "Love, Honor, Negotiate". lt has been our life motto. We pass it on.
