We'll be riding the Foxy's Fall Century next Saturday, the 18th, p/b the Davis Bike Club. We're doing it on the tandem, since the last time we did this -- 2010, I think -- we rode it on the tandem. We did a metric last weekend on our own, so the added 40 miles should be interesting.

my latest "century" was last Saturday. As I have posted before, I am doing the Ultramarathon Cycling Year Rounder challenge: ride 12 centuries in 10 calendar months in 2014. Among other criteria, the ride has to be a minimum of 90 miles. I rode 97.6 on Saturday. I lead the Moon Valley club ride, which was a pretty good ride. I got home about 11:30 with 60 miles in. I had a turkey sandwich, made some more heed, put some ice in my camelback and extra water bottle, and was back out by about noon. It was 68 when I left home for the club ride, and in the low 80's when I left again after lunch. The club ride was relatively flat, but the afternoon loop had 1200 ft of climbing, almost all in the first 18 miles. I got home by shortly after 2, in time to get showered and dressed and head to an Oktoberfest with friends

SCOTT! Yay! You and your friend will be much faster than we'll be on anything but the downhills. If you see a silver-to-blue Co-Motion tandem and the stoker has red hair, please be sure to say hello.

Finished #8 today. Banded Suffering. A member of one of the local sponsored racing teams has Type 1 diabetes. He was there and rode. His mom was there as one of the volunteers and spoke to the group before the ride. A high-school aged girl who volunteered at the water stops has Type 1 as well. Good ride for a good cause. We did do some suffering. On a 1/2 mile portion of one of the hills, the road was so steep that my front wheel lifted from the pavement a couple of times. That was a new experience for me out on the road.

The metric was really fun. At one point, after the first rest stop, we had 38 bikes (including 2 tandems) in our tandem "train." We met a friend with whom we do on the shop ride, whose longest ride to date was 45 mi. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. The vibe was great.
Scott, I'm really sorry about your accident. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Crap. Sorry about that. It's odd how we always get injured when and how we least expect it.

Thanks everybody. Saturday night was bad, but Sunday was way worse - that's when I went to the ER. Monday was much better but I'm not thinking about work until Wednesday.

Apparently it's common for these musculo-skeletal injuries to get worse for a couple days before they start to get better. Plus you get stiff from disuse over night. Getting out of bed is the most painful part of my day. I kind of like peeing in a bottle though... useful skill to have.

We did this ride beginning last Sunday and ended up on Tuesday. White Rim Trail Several of us rode 31 miles from the bike rental in Moab out to the trail entrance, did the trail, and climbed back out of the canyon rode back downhill to Moab. MTB's on roads suck the life out of me. We had a support truck carry our gear, food and beer that followed us over the 103 mile trail. Weather was nice with highs in the low 70's and overnight down into the low 50's. With careful planning we had our full shares ice cold Fat Tire Amber Ale's every day after the rides. Amazing place but not for those who fear heights. There were not a lot of riders we passed on the trail but many of those were eligible for the 50+ forum.

Been doing the cycling thing for almost five years, so I'm relatively new to the sport. Not a racer by any means, but like to tour and spend a fair amount of time in the saddle. A bucket list goal of mine for for the last couple years has been a double century. Finally achieved it a couple weeks ago. Rode from my Grandson's house (daughter and son-in-law) in Sidney NE to home, north of Kearney NE. 228 miles. Started at 5 am MST and finished at midnight CST. I think I could have gone a few miles more. Ha! Maybe next time! Next up, the Triple Bypass?

Here is a not-quite-but-almost century we rode on Saturday. I got 96.4 miles but I like to think that the climbing makes up for the missed 3.6 miles. Over the course of the day I racked up 11,161 feet of climbing . . . and almost ran out of daylight.
Five of us started at 8:00AM from Encanto Park in Duarte (all but one 50+). We got on the San Gabriel River Trail MUP very close to the park, then merged with Hwy 39 a mile or so later. We took Hwy 39 to the Crystal Lake turn-off and from there 2 miles to the Crystal Lake Café, where we had lunch. It was a first-time-climb to Crystal Lake Café for Ken and Arlene, just one of many for Bob, Linda and myself.
After lunch we descended to East Fork. At this point, Arlene and Ken took Hwy 39 back to the park, I.e. an out-and-back route. Linda, Bob and myself took East Fork to Camp Williams and after a short food/water stop rode Little GMR up to the GRR/GMR junction (about a five mile climb). At this point, Linda and Bob turned right and took Big GMR (Glendora Mountain Road) back to Sierra Madre, then back to the start.
I turned left and took GRR (Glendora Ridge Road) over to Mt. Baldy Village, filled my bottles at the Lodge (well, really Kim filled them!) and rode back over GRR to GMR, then to Sierra Madre and back to the park. Total miles: 96.2 (not quite a century). Total climbing: 11,161 feet.
Here are all the details on Stava or Garmin, as you prefer.
Strava: Bike Ride Profile | Encanto to Crystal Lake Cafe, Camp Williams, GRR to Mt. Baldy Village, back GRR/GMR near Duarte | Times and Records | Strava
Garmin: Garmin Connect
This route strings together several good climbs and I think any 50+ climbers in the area, or any visiting Southern California, would enjoy it.

I was wondering what that would be like.
i work about a mile from the dam entrance and late this summer was making an after work effort to see if I could get to Crystal lake as an after work ride. The last effort got me to around 2500 ft before my turnaround time. Longer days and it won't be a problem, in fact now I'm thinking now GMR may become the new LWH (Long Way Home) come spring and longer days.
39 on weekends can be a traffic circus. Weekday late afternoons you pretty much have it to yourself other than the occasional Caltrans, CDF or LACo PW trucks.
Worked on cadence and zone 2 today. From the house to the end of the SGRT then down to Long Beach and back up and across the dam again, then home.
94.5 mi 5:45 ride time
didn't realize that the last time I'd done that ride was clear back in May.

My century had gas for 25 cents a gallon, kids playing outdoors until the street lights came on, decent jobs with insurance, retirement and security, homes and cars that could be bought with savings, and telephones that stayed on the desk where they belong.

Century #29 for the year. This time I added some miles in the dark (started at 8:00AM, should have started at 7:00 AM).

Rode my last double century of 2014 last Saturday. It was the Dead of Winter Double, presented by the Los Angeles Wheelmen. I got lost at one point and added some "bonus miles" but thankfully happened upon a small peloton of 50+ cyclists (MAMIL's) who kindly helped get me back on course.
The start was at 4:30 AM and a chilly 46 Deg.F. as we headed North up Pacific Coast Highway as the light of the full moon shimmered off the ocean. By the time we'd reached the first checkpoint at Port Hueneme it was light. As the sun came up the temps came up too, mostly in the 60's but we did get up to the mid 70's after the 3rd checkpoint in Ojai.
Overall a beautiful day on the bike with an 8:00 PM finish. See all the details on the Strava link:
Bike Ride Profile | Dead of Winter Double Century 2014 - Beautiful Day on the Bike near Malibu | Times and Records | Strava
Counting the doubles as one century only, that's 30 centuries for 2014. Of those, seven were doubles: Camino Real, Hemet, Devil Mountain, Grand Tour, Knoxville, Bass Lake and Dead of Winter.
Taking a break from centuries for the winter!
