I find it hilarious that there's actually a street in Dallas named Debbie Lane.

I was 265 when I hit back into it last year, bought a hybrid kept it for a month , was nice but wanted more challenge, hit a road bike, CAAD8 had to replace the wheels because I kept popping spokes, bought Vuelta Corsa HD and haven't flinched since....I have done about 1000 miles since last year, some folks would laugh at that but it's a big accomplishment or me...Get your bike tuned or buy a used decent bike and see if you warn to keep at it...For me $600 was enough and max budget... I love my bike...also look on craigslist...might find a deal three ...good luck.

You might consider a trike. Many have higher weight limits, and spread the weight over 3 wheels.

Finally broke down and got my own bike as opposed to riding my wife's. Hers tried to kill me...threw me off 'cause I couldn't get the handlebars tight enough, they slipped down and landed on my knee as that knee was on the upstroke. First time I fell off a bike in over 40 years!

Anyway, I bought a new Jamis Explorer 2. Feels great, easy to ride, gives me a good workout around the neighborhood. Now to find some bike paths so I don't get tired of seeing all my neighbor's houses day after day. :-)

Your wife's bike sound evil. Congrats on your purchase.

Bikes: Surly LHTD with a YAK trailer. I may have to ditch the trailer and go to panniers but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Good for you rhodesmk, you've made a good start on that weight. I'm 5' 7" and at one time weighed 206, which is not close to obese but I was definitely overweight. In addition to riding my bike I also gave up alcohol, cold turkey (and I WAS pouring down a LOT of the sauce). Additionally I went on a low carb/low sugar and high animal fat diet. Now I'm down to approx. 175LB and I have high hopes of losing another 20LB. I don't know about your health problems but you may want to take a look at that diet (yeah, it smells a lot like "Paleo diet"!). Anyway, I wish the best for you, don't get discouraged, perseverance is the key.

My health is improving. From 135lbs at 5'11" in 1973 to 380lbs a couple of years ago, developed Type II diabetes, I've dropped (so far) to 310 as of last week, mostly through diet. Over the past two years, I've had knee surgery, rotator cuff surgery, and a spinal discectomy and fusion (that last one in March 2013). All that kept me from being able to exercise much, but the bike should help now.

Still doing insulin, but blood sugars have been under control, averaging about 115 - 120 before most meals. Turning 60 in November, looking to get down to around 225 eventually. It's a long slow road. I didn't put on all the weight overnight...I won't take it off that quickly either. But it's getting better. The bike is my gift to myself for the first 70lbs, and should help me do the last 85 over the next few years.

Thanks!!

Just an FYI, the nih would define you as obese at 206 lbs.

I didn't read through all of the responses, but I have been riding for years, and I am about where you are. 57 years old, and weigh 325 as of this weekend. Down from a lifetime max of 423, and a max last year of about 360.

The Clydesdale forum will provide some good info, but a couple of highlights.

1) Avoiding intake of calories is the best way to lose weight.

2) You can't out-ride a bad diet.

For me, cycling provides the fitness, and a sense of well-being that has helped me to lose weight recently. It is going to take time, but do push yourself slightly above your comfort level so that your fitness level increases.

As far as bikes, I like hybrids right now, and anything other than the high dollar carbon fiber bikes that weigh less than a fart will do fine... preferably with 36 spoke wheels. My current bike is a Trek 7.3 FX that I have equipped with wider cyclocross tires (35 mm) and I do well on pavement, crushed stone and gravel.

The clydesdale forum is very supportive of anyone regardless of their current level of fitness, and has some very motivating threads and messages. Just in case you are like me... remember that different people advance at different rates, so look to personal improvement as a measurement of success, and not what others have done.
