A 60 miler Close to Home

I like long rides. Don't like the thought of my wife or neighbor having to go a long way to get me in the event of a problem. Yesterday did 60 miles by doubling my usual run and adding a few small side jaunts. Fortunately, most of my neighborhood consists of ocean views, lighthouses, and open fields. A short 16 minute lunch at Tim Horton's and two Snickers provided the fuel. Was never more than 13 miles from home.

I can do up to about 40 miles using a series of loops that allows me to never get more than about 6 to 8 miles from home. I use it a lot when rain threatens..

Luckily, we live in a part of the world where riding is great. Staying close to home is OK, but I actually like the idea of being a bit far from home. I tend to get bored doing the same route twice in a row, but I can see your point of being considerate to someone who might have to do the rescue run. I try to have the basic problems covered, but there is always something that could happen to end a ride. The only ride I had to end early was a failed bottom bracket, and fortunately, I was about 8 miles from home when it happened. Wife came to get me, but I still had to wait quite a while, she didn't make it a "priority"

Thankfully I can do lots of rides close to home without ever doing the same ride twice. There are so many variations in the Whittier Hills, Hacienda Heights, Puente Hills, Rowland Heights and Brea areas, so many different roads and climbs to amazing remote locations all within 25 miles of home.

Of course, like otg above, I like being a bit further from home, up in the real mountains, riding centuries and double centuries yet sometimes I simply don't have the spare time for all that. I do carry enough to handle most small emergencies and try to keep the bikes maintained well enough to avoid major component failure . . . but you're right, anything can happen.

As Murphy has taught us: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong . . . eventually . The only problem with calling my wife for rescue is that she's just an likely to be out on a ride too.

Whoa.....take a trip and never leave the farm.

I have similar routes. I can do a 60 in our local area by riding a lap around our lake. Congrats on your ride!

Sounds like a fun time.

For myself.....no mountains but headwinds 80% of time, restroom and cold water no more than minutes away, quiet, no traffic, endless miles of never stopping your pedaling motion.......https://www.google.com/maps/preview?...d=0CKsBEPIBMAs

at 0100 to 0600 ideal riding especially under a full moon.

Part of my "close to home 200 mile day" ride.
