My wife made sure I gave up fast women well before I was over 50.

Don't know If this is relevant but It's about women riders and the old lesson,, you know the one, 'Never judge a book by It's cover'

I was Mountain biking on one particularly hot full sun mid day and came upon two very lost very tired/soaked in sweat ladies.
Both were mid 30's,, I am 56,,
The thing was one was a very Very large girl,, wrestled In college large, big boned, ok ok IMO over weight...

I offered to lead them back to the double track that would take them to the trail head and they were grateful to say the least. The shortest way involved a double track called the 'Meadows'...
Very fast down hills and a super hard climb that repeated about four times. The climbs were killers and many riders did Intervals there for power..

Off we went,,,

I lost sight of the large lady,, she smoked me going up those hills...

Just sayin.

60 y/o 16 inch wheels...25 mph on a flat road.
She rode DF for 20 years with an average of 21 mph.
Gave that up to cancer.

I read recently, I believe it was the story of Team 7-11, originally composed of many cyclists from Michigan, who race skate during winter and ride bike in summer.

Eric Heiden wasnt from Michigan but was indeed one of those dual race types. Gold Medalist in speedskating and a dandy rider even if it wasnt his prominent sport.

He is currently Team BMC doctor.

A Strava segment on a MUP? That's just wrong, man. Besides, I've been on that stretch of MUP between Charlevoix and Petosky. In a word, it sucks.

This reminds me of something I read online. The poster laid out a mountain bike race course and was doing all the last minute preparations when one of the featured female racers showed up. The woman wanted to ride the course as a preview the day before. The poster said he would personally show her the course and they took off at a fast pace. The was feeling really good tgat he was keeping up with a nationally ranked woman and even was getting cocky. Then her wrist watch computer chirped. She said thats my alarm and my warmup is over. She thanked him and took off leaving him in the dust.

Very technical down near the Bay Harbor zone. Lots of drive crossings and two intersections. Sure is pretty going down into Petoskey at Magnus Park along the shoreline.

I did race last weekend in Rochester Hills on the Velodrome and my Garmin said that it was 102 degrees on the track.
During the warm months, in the UP, the mosquitoes look like B-52s on steroids. A couple years back, I saw two of them carrying a full grown deer back in the woods, to eat later!

Wanderer, speaks the truth! We spent last week camping in the U.P. (Tahq. Falls) and cloud of mosquitoes that followed me around on my MTB, just waiting for me to stop (or fall again) was impressive! I would be riding along and would say "I should take a picture of that.... oh, wait that means stopping... on second thought, no.... "

I live in Saginaw (considered Mid-Michigan) and it is incredibly flat here! Like see for miles and miles flat... only hills around here are the overpasses... but get up north or west... there are some pretty nice climbs! For days when I have to have some elevation I head to the West Branch area... (I grew up there)

If you think the mosquitoes in the UP are bad, you probably haven't camped there during a black fly hatching. We were up in the Porcupine Mountains during a hatching, and it cleared out nearly the whole campground.

Been through both. Neither was as brutal as the "normal housefly" looking flies that DRILLED you through clothes. We were backpacking Picture Rocks near Chapel Beach when they hit us. We stayed in our tents as much as possible until it was time to move out. Only the AMWAY stuff in a spray can warded them off.

Speaking of mosquitos, all the rain for the past month has really produced some viscious ones here in S. Michigan. But nuttin' like those ones in the UP. Here's a little song from Da Yoopers, who also gave us such timeless classics as _The Second Week of Deer Camp_.

We have a 13.4mi Strava course on our MUP around the bay. Every year I ride it with intensity just to maintain my top 10 standing. Yes, we have fun. I check the course every day expecting to get knocked out of "the 10". The other day I watched my name drop to 12 because of a new record being set.....by a woman. After some searching, I find that she is in her 50's.

Check this out:

Is it prudent to be setting Strava records on a MUP? Sounds a little hazardous to other non-cycling users.

At age 80 she's still pedalin' with me on our tandem!
Has tandemed over 240,000 miles since 1975 and she was riding single bike before that.
She entered one very competitive race, won it and said "Guess I can't do any better than first place . . . '
