Prostatitus

How did I get it? I am a 67 year old man who has been riding two-wheeled bikes--motor or bicycles most of his life. I very recently have had my bike, a US Postal Trex 5200, modified so it fit me the best ever - it hasn't always. Consequently I have been putting in big miles (for me) the last 10 weeks or so, forty to sixty mile rides, at least a couple times per week. I have even gotten on with several old farts like me who have plans to tour Yellowstone the first of September - 300+ miles in eight days. BUT, a couple weeks ago I took a several hundred mile motorcycle ride aboard my 2011 Honda Goldwing up to Knoxville and ended up with a urinary tract infection with an extremely enlarged prostate. The antibiotics have quickly worked and my prostate has since shrunk. This is evidenced by a "more normal" flow of--well you know what I mean. The prostate could have been enlarged some before I ever started my big miles on my bicycle or long motorcycle ride however. My question, and thanks for sticking with me on this, is WHAT WAS THE LIKELY CAUSE OF THE URINARY TRACT INFECTION--the biking or the motorcycling? The symptoms, chills, shaking and cold sweats hit me upon finishing my first day (about 7 or 8 hours) on the motorcycle.

Welcome to the 50+ and to BF in general. I kind of doubt that either activity was the singular cause, but I am not a doctor and I didn't sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night so take this with a grain of salt. Unless you wore the same kit or underwear several days in a row while riding either one something else is probably at fault, from my experience. Good to know you are feeling better now.

Bill

Any free Medical diagnosis forums? This one is not it. you may have to consult a Urologist .. if any accept Medicare, shouldn't cost too much ..

same age as you .. I go thru the VA, because the US Navy was what I did in the 60's..

I vote for option 3: The age. As we poor Prostate-Afflicted males get older, our prostates get bigger and easier to damage, so all the activities we used to do without worry are now increasingly fraught with risk. I recently changed saddles because I was getting complaints from "down there". Now if I can just get used to my el-cheapo saddle's tendency to creak something awful... sigh...

Well, of course as one who rides such things, I am obligated to say that you need to sell your upright bike and motorbike and start riding recumbent bicycles...............................
On the other hand, I have no idea what caused your prostatitis. It seems that the causes of prostatitis are often unclear: Prostatitis: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Tests, and Treatment.
Hope you don't suffer recurrence.

Combination of bumping up the mileage and possibly being dehydrated will bring on a UTI in my experience. Might want to back off on the saddle time for a little bit and really concentrate on hydrating.

It is my understanding that prostatitus not the same thing as a UTI. In fact, I was diagnosed with prostatitus by process of elimination, i.e., identifying what I did NOT have. Urinalasis showed that I did not have a UTI. However, I had an enlarged prostate and (severe) symptoms. Prostatitus can be cause by a pelvic injury, trauma or other kind of irritation. I hadn't been riding my bike all that much at the time, but had sustained a pelvic injury not long before my diagnosis. See my signature below..

Just in case you haven't had a recent PSA test, this might be a good time to rule out any recent increase in your number.
Best of luck,
Harry

First, welcome to 50 plus. And now..

I'm 57 and ride a fixed gear. (A Fixie)

I have had UTIs twice, one of them was related to prostatitus. Yes, I had to do the usual course of antibiotics.

I had both of these nasties during the off-season, when I was not riding due to our lovely Boston winters.

My PCP stated that it very unlikely that this was cycling related. He further stated that contrary to popular belief,
males DO get these infections. He felt that a visit to a urologist was not needed, unless I had a recurrence in a short
amount of time. (I didn't. They were three years apart ) He said that some males simply are more prone to this as a result of ,,, and you know where this is going,
aging. Like it or not.

It should be noted that my PCP at the time was an avid cyclist, who usually rode to his office. I have not doubt that there are
some docs out there who turn on the shriek machine when a patient says that they are an avid cyclist. Guess they think we should
dress in loud pants and go play golf.

Like I often feel compelled to remind people, Doctors are humans who passed the minimum licensing requirements for their job. Just like cooks, plumbers or auto mechanics, some are very good at their job and others...not so much.

Give D-Mannose a try. It will clear up UTI in a few days. Any health food store should have it.

Drink cranberry juice. Not for prostatitis but to help prevent and treat UTIs.

I was once told that stimulation, from vibration, can cause this. With that in mind, maybe it was the motorcycle, not the bicycle, but it may have been either one or the combination.

That is an excellent point. By all means, keep reminding people.

Dr. Paul Dudley White was the boss of cardiology at MA General Hospital for many years. The bike paths that go around the Charles River Basin
are named for him, and his bicycle, a vintage 3-speed, was still hanging in the Museum of Science, last time I visited. Dr. White felt that bicycle
riding was one of the best exercises that anyone could do. And yet, today, one can find doctors that go into freak-o-matic mode, when someone
over 50, or even 40, states that he or she is a cyclist. Not to get off-topic here, but why is this?

On Cranberry Juice: Yes, but you need real, un-sweetened, no-nonsense cranberry juice. Has a very tart taste. People used to sweetened
drinks will have to get used to it. Still, not bad, once you get used to it. Trader Joe's sells it, in 32 ounce bottles. I think real Cranberry Juice
is one of those things that must be packaged in a glass bottle, as any other material would probably leech into the juice. I could be wrong there.

I knew Prostititus. He was the grandson of Sparticus, a noble warrior.

There are lots of good sources of medical information on the inter webs. BF isn't one of them.
