1st time in 40+ years . . .
Riding single bike yesterday through 6 mile long construction zone.
Got a flat on rear wheel from a cactus thorn. Put in spare tube, pumped it up, but no luck as the valve stem separated from the tube.
Pulled out the tire I flatted and sat on the roadside to patch it; all went well until I tried putting glue on the holy tube . . . all the glue had dried up!
So, stuck out my thumb. Fortunately got a lift from a fellow bike rider that drove a jeep with a rack on the rear.
Guess all was not bad luck!

thanks for the reminder to check my patches & glue. everytime I swap a bike trunk I look at my flat kit and think hmmm, wonder if that glue has dried up. I think I have some glueless patches anyway but I really should check that tube I guess huh?

Been there, done that. Now I get a new patch kit every spring. Leave them in the bike too long and those tubes can dry out even if they've never been opened.

I'm always temped to leave my bike rack on my sub, but I'll end up getting a ticket. I don't know if that happens a lot, but I'm afraid to take the chance. Anyhow you made out ok.

Blocking the license plate or lights is illegal probably everywhere. So that is why the rear rack wasn't left on; this is pure speculation.

Been there, done that back in the days when tires weren't as puncture-resistant as they are today.Now, once I open the glue, I put an unopened one in the bag just in case.

Around here, some of the police cars have racks on them. Hitch racks have always been okay, until the last year or two when police departments everywhere started looking for new ways to raise money. The possibility of handing out tickets for 'blocking license plates' must have been published in a trade magazine or something, because the practice started popping up everywhere, all at once.

After a mostly great summer I had a two week span of horrible luck. 3 flats in three days commuting to work; last time I was out of spares. I had the scab patches, but didnt hold well near deformed spot in tube. I had to reinflate three times over 17 miles, but I made it.

For me... I struggle between being prepared for anything (I do cycling some long distances by myself) and being over-loaded with extra equipment I will never use. I know the worse thing that could happen is being stuck with making a phone call for help.

Have also tried 'scab' glueless patches and was not impressed.
