I wear Aerotech Designs Pro shorts(the interesting designs not single color(see avatar)) -- for rides less than 65/70 miles. For longer rides over 70 miles, I wear Sugoi shorts. Only because others have mentioned it, my saddle is a Specialized Avatar.

I don't use padded shorts, but for touring I use the hiker's trick (two pair of socks) and layer the boxer briefs.

My specialized are my favorite/most comfortable pair Specialized Bicycle Components.
The guy at the LBS recomended them based on my body type, mid sized, not skinny not too round.

Pearl Izumi Attack shorts. Have been using them exclusively for four years and currently have 6 of them. Never had a problem with comfort, fit or anything else. I don't wear bibs because I have yet to find one that fits properly. Between the PI Attack shorts and my ISM Adamo Prologue saddle, I can ride all day in comfort and without pain.

It really doesn't seem to matter to me. I have all kinds, from $20 Nashbar cheapos to ... well ... I guess I really don't spend much more than $50 on a pair. Some have light fabric and thin pads, others have heavier fabric and thicker pads. I pick the shorts for the weather and the length of the ride more than anything else.

For shorter rides, I don't really have a preference. I have a variety that I have accumulated, and will wear what the weather dictates - lately it has been castelli long bibs. My all time favorite for centuries are a pair of Pactimo ascent bibs. I got them on sale for around 90 and really like the comfort they provide

I'm going to second a poster on the previous page and state that I used lightweight summer shorts or bibs from Performance bikes. Most of the time lately though I ride with some sort of mountain bike short. The over shell with pockets etc seems to be very useful. I am not predominately a road biker however and spend most of my time on trails and fire roads in the country.

I started with Canari from one of the big box stores. Finally bought the more expensive "Ultra" shorts from Performance Bike. No comparison, the PB Ultra's are way way better. Around $70.00.

I switched from shorts to bibs a couple of years ago. I still keep a couple of pair of PI Elite In-R-Cool shorts for short/casual rides, or on the trainer, but for everything else it's bibs. So far, the PI Elite In-R-Cool bibs fit best and are most comfortable. I tried a step up in the PI line and they're just as comfortable, but the fit is loose on the lower leg. I got some bibs from where I work, but I can't remember the name right now - they're not too bad (for commuting), but not as good as the PI bibs. I just got a pair of Assos T-Cento bibs so once the weather warms up I'll be able to see whether the price is worth it (they feel very comfortable standing around, although like the upper end PI bibs, the legs are a bit loose).

good luck getting a consensus!
but I'll throw in my 2cents for the thinner/lightweight style liner. I use Zoot trishorts under MTB shorts (MTB liner removed) so those bicycleclothing dot com shorts guidoStow recommneded look appealing

I now ride Voler shorts in preference to all others I've tried, and I've tried a lot of them - though not Assos. If I can ride 250 miles quite comfortably without spending that kind of money, why would I do it?
My current favorite pad is their Chrono SLM. I haven't tried their new Comp HP:
Comparing Voler's Pads
Their Caliber short, currently on sale for $69, uses the Chrono pad and their best compression fabric. Yep, they're tight.
