Evolving...

Back when we had leather chamois linings, I went commando beneath my cycling shorts. You had to soften the leather before riding, though. I used Noxema at the time, as it had a mild antiseptic action.

In the mid-1980s, I began wearing compression shorts beneath my cycling shorts, as a result of having to ride home after a softball game on evening. I liked the compression action, plus they kept things, um, in order.

Although the brand and materials have changed, I've stuck with the compression shorts beneath cycling pants. I now use smooth UnderArmor compression shorts. Never worn twice between washings, and find that I have to wash my cycling shorts less because they don't come in contact with my skin. Maybe every fourth or fifth use.

Anyway, that's what I do, FWIW...

+1

Just as comfortable and means cycling shorts last longer, in better condition.

Chafing can be the result of many different things. I find, however, that the fewer seams in the garment the better (including cycling specific shorts). On my commute to and from work, I wear regular street clothes including undergarments. For recreational rides, where I'm in a less upright position and increasing time and mileage considerably, I wear cycling bibs. It is only on very hot humid days with 4+ hours on the bike that I have any need for a lubricant of any kind. But on those days, Chamois Butt’r is welcome.

When wearing bike shorts - commando. But why wear them?

I use UnderArmour HeatGear compression shorts. I wear them under normal shorts or pants or whatever, can ride forever, and still look like a normal human being when I get off the bike. The question for me is not "what do you wear under the bike shorts?", it's "Why are you wearing bike shorts?". Yes, I have a pair or two left somewhere, but that's just not how I want to ride. I just don't do it any more.
