Scott Addict - Frame Size

I am thinking of buying a bike after many years. I was measured at the bike shop and told a 52 was correct for me (I am 5'7"). However there is a nearly new 54 Scott Addict for half the price second hand.
This is all new to me so is the difference between a 52 and 54 material?
Any advice would we welcomed.

Cheers

Paul

It can be material, depending on the person. Two people suited to a particular model in a 52 size might have very different experiences with trying a 54 (for one person, it may be a greater adjustment because they are suited to slightly smaller bikes than the other and are not as flexible).

A better question might be whether the 54 Addict fits you. If the bike shop measured you and said you are a 52 in a particular model or brand, that doesn't answer whether a 54 Addict will fit well. It may be that you are ideally a 53 on some scale and can fit either and they tend to put people on the size down. Also, a lot will depend on your cycling inseam, other proportions, and flexibility.

All other things being equal (which they wont be exactly because bike models differ in geometry), the larger bike probably has a very slightly longer wheelbase (affects handling a small amount) and will put your handlebars higher and farther away from you (you have to reach a bit further forward but not as far down). If you want to race, this will affect aerodynamics. You can alter the handlebar positioning with a stem change, but there are limits to that.

Old rule of thumb is: If you can straddle the top tube with an inch to spare you can adjust the saddle and stem to a decent, maybe perfect, fit.

I agree that stems and saddle positioning can make significant accommodation (within reason), but wonder if the old rule of thumb is very helpful on modern compact road racing frames.

Learn what sizes are right for you first,?

"size" Is Seat Tube Length , seat posts can be pulled up higher.. the frames Top tube length is my key. stem length choice is adjusting reach , there.

given sloping top tubes Virtual is a horizontal line..

I could agree with much of what you say if we were discussing a 52cm vs 62cm. A difference between 52cm and 54cm is imperceptible. Especially when compensated for by a correspondingly shorter stem.
