Please Help Identify Bike Frame // New Rider &Bike
Hello everyone,
I am new to the biking world. But living in NYC, it just seems to make more sense getting around via a bicycle. Like a lot of people, I started my search on Craigslist. In the end I bought a single speed steel (don't know if it's cromoly or lugged) Fuji for $200. But other than that, I don't have any additional information on it. I was hoping that someone here with more knowledge and experience on the matter can help me out. I haven't had the chance to tune and upgrade parts yet, so please excuse the way it looks. My goal is to convert it into a workhorse commuting bike.
I checked the bottom bracket and the serial number can only be partially read. From what I can make out, it seems to say 78A01065.
Here is the link to the picture.
Thanks a bunch.

Your bike was the 1065th bike made in January 1978.
From our forum member T-Mar:
SERIAL NUMBERS 1976-1978*:
Serial number format YYXZZZZZ where:
YY = two numbers indicating the year of production
X = a letter, indicating the calendar month of manufacturer (A = January, B = February, C = March, etc)
ZZZZZ = a five digit number sequence, probably indicating frame number during month
Example: 77B13425 indicates the 14.425th frame manufactured during February 1977.

Than you so much for your help, I've recently begun to do a little research and actually ran across T-Mar's posts about Fuji identification. I've also Fuji's bike catalog for 1978, but there are so many Fuji models made in 1978 alone, and they all look identical to my untrained eye. There is no way to tell which particular model this bike is now that all the paints been worn down, right?

This is a converted road bike...try posting in Singlespeed & Fixed Gear forum and also the Vintage forum, you might have better luck...Fixed Gear Freestyle is more for trick riding, and for the most part is a fairly dead forum.

No, not necessarily. Many parts have been replaced but there might be enough left to at least narrow it down.
The vintage Fuji site might be helpful also. Your bike is lugged. Lugged frames are often cromoly, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Are you sure that bike fits you? The way it looks to me you must have long legs and short arms or torso.

Thabks Tugadude for the informative response. I'll take a look at the vintage Fuji site. As for the fitting question, the bike fits my legs okay. I'm actually not sure if it fits my upper body well. I guess I should do some research about that also. I do know that my hands hurt from pressing into the handlebars after a 2h ride, maybe that's a sign that I'm pressing too hard into it because my weight is not distributed corectly... What makes you think that it doesn't fit right?

Seat too far forward I think. Perhaps that is throwing your weight too far forward. That would account for your hands bothering you. You can google bicycle fitment for more info. If a bike doesn't fit it is generally pretty obvious. Do you know the frame size? Looks like a tall frame, 61cm or 25" possibly.
