That mostly because the rider on the normal bike has a better engine or a good bike or both. Suggest the one on the Brompton to test drive a normal bike and compare the avg and max speed with that on the Brompton to conclude. Here at London sometimes I see some serious Brompton cyclists, by serious, I mean Lycra, clipless, s bar and they are fast as rockets especially when starting from red lights.

Stock Bromptons are a bit slowish. But not that slow.
Folders can be fast. Most on these forums know this or have experienced this truth. My black mezzo has rarely ever been passed on the roads. Always by a road race bike. Its over taken more roadies. Usually no ones racing I find.
Silly stuff really, but these misconceptions still make up the majority. Which is the background for the "joke".
Reminds me of people saying :"yes but I cant go fast its got small wheels."
I sometimes reply
"It has gears...."
if i cant be bothered explaining why its a tricked out bike. Or explaining that gyroscopic forces dont increase stability for larger wheels myth.....
Lately my bike is alot slower, must be a change in the gyroscpic force relationship, it definitely not me....honest.......dam I need an excuse.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with the article. It would be funny to see a pro shows up to compete in Tour DE France on a Brompton.

On a different tangent, there are also Youtube videos of riders on Bromptons doing BMX-style stunts.
Personally, I've passed huffing-puffing roadies on my 3-speed Brompton, as well as roadies on their latest and greatest weight-weenie carbon rigs on my 10-year old Air Friday. The motor counts a lot more than the bike.

I seem to remember riders on Bromptons having completed Paris-Brest-Paris.

I regularly overtake pudgy, santan-gorged, kretek-chain-smoking bapaks riding clunky rigs from VOC days that have not been serviced or oiled once since the times of Jan Pieterszoon Coen...

In theory a small wheeler is faster than a equally geared 700c due to less air drag.
If the guy was riding a Moulton the article couldn't have been written at all.

I won't catch a roadie hammering loops in the park, but I do pass most bikes on city streets, on a Brompton and a Tern. I also beat just about everyone starting from a stoplight; I don't know whether to attribute it to smaller wheels or something else, but I accelerate faster. And I can dodge traffic on these bikes better than most. A Brompton might not manage the top speeds of some other bikes, but they're not inherently slow, and I roll my eyes at those who scoff at folding bikes.

When I used to own a Xootr Swift w/a NuVinci hub, I'd pass full sized bikes all the time. It was heavy, it did have drag, but it was FAST!

Yep that sums up why I get passed. On my old squeaky 27" tire bikes I get passed by mtb moms towing kids, wrinkly guys with white hair.. not much to do with the bikes.
