Thought I found my high performance folder...sigh....

Thought I found my bike. Called Bike Friday to order and they were even running a special deal on top of that. Alas, BF told me that I could not order the bike as it was not priced properly. What they wanted was double that.... Sigh....

But it was worth a few minutes of excitement.

    Yan,

Nah. Every business has its policies. They are not obligated to offer anything. If they sold it at the advertised price, they would have sold it to me at the price they bought the bike for. And of if they want to refurbish it, it would have cost them $. That was a 2014 bike so I assume it was in solid condition since these are good bikes. As it is, even if they sold it to me at $580, they won't make any $. And I'm sure BM in the business of making a profit. I did waste some time trying to chase a BF down over the weeks by checking their website postings and reading their promo emails and then calling in and waiting for the consultant to to check upstream if they will sell the bike or not. Other than time and disappointment, no harm done.

You'd think no harm, but now I'm a little circumspect about dealing with a company that won't honor it's own advertised prices. You got a big middle finger, and I'm the one that's angry about it, lol.

To be fair, their consultant that I dealt with has been nothing but excellent. Our first call many weeks ago probably went 40 minutes. Then when I did not supply him the measurements he wanted in a follow-up email, he did not pester me but waited for a few weeks before sending another email. Quite discreet really. My wife and I ended up measuring and providing inseam, weight, height, age- you probably know the drill. I did tell him upfront that we were value shoppers looking for preowned so we may not have be their demographic. But anyways, I can't fault the consultant I dealt with.

Given that, I do understand that they could have just decided to honor the price (though they were actually running another promotion on top of that which would have made it doubly crazy!) and ask for no refurbishing just to break even. But that's really their prerogative. When I was in grad school, I too ran a small biz and one time, keeping my word cost me $2K. There were no contracts except my word. BUT what I did was voluntary due to my personal beliefs. BF has no legal obligation to do that and they were within their legal rights.

There was a bit of question in my mind however if this happened on a regular basis. I've not been around BF's website long enough to know. It was curious as it was explained to me as a computer glitch but their website software seem pretty mature after all these years. If it did happen on a regular basis, I wonder if it is a way to get people to call in. I'm not at all assuming that they do that at all- just that it was curious.

Anyways, my point is that there's really no reason to get angry though I appreciate that you cared enough to post.... Following global events regularly, I see PLENTY of things to really get incensed about such as slave trade, killing of innocents by ISIS, religious persecution, bigotry etc. Hope you don't mind but I don't think event is not one of them. Relax....

Rules may be different in UK. This can be classed as misleading advertising or binding contract law, but there is the 'genuine mistake' clause. A few years ago Argos sold several TV for a few pounds or pence on line. They decided to honour there advertising rather than risk bad publicity.

In the U.S., there is nothing binding about an advertisement. Believe it or not, from a legal standpoint, an advertisement is generally thought to be an invitation to make an offer. The law figures that errors in printing occur. I would still be frustrated if I had gotten my hopes up for such a deal.

I wonder what the bike friday was supposed to sell for - was it a transposition of the 5 and 8, so that it was supposed to be 850? Even that sounds a bit reasonable for bike friday.

No, but I think Yan as a business owner himself knows the value of taking a disappointment for a customer into something positive by giving something else to them.

I am not quite sure I understand what has happened here and maybe the OP can clarify. Was he aiming to buy a new bike for the same price as the pre-owned one? Or was there a mistake in the pricing of the pre-owned bike on the website, and if so, what was the correct price for it?

There was a mistake with the price of the bike on the website. It has since been corrected to $1195.
