Flying with a Folder in Canada
Last weekend I took my Strida with me on an excursion to Edmonton Alberta. West Jet in Canada now accepts a folding bike as regular luggage with a size less than 80 combined inches. Reading Air Canada's web site info they may do the same but I haven't tested it. Here is a blog post detailing my adventure.

Air Canada has never accepted folders as regular luggage. Tell them there is a bike in there and they charge you $50 regardless of size and if it is a code share, you can pay up to $150. I once had a box that had a picture of a bike on it and they wanted to charge me $50 for it! They said it was a bike, I told them it was a folded Burley Travoy trailer, which it was. I then asked them how they possibly thought a bike could fit in that size of box?

Hi Blakcloud, interesting, I have two customers who flew AC to South America last winter business class with no bike fees. They are on their way to Paris this week with AC and flying economy so we will see what happens. I will update and yes I may have made a mistake reading AC's baggage and bike page and thinking it was similar to West Jets.

I flew with Air Canada from Calgary to Vancouver this summer with my bike... I had intended to pack it in a large suitcase and had called to inquire about policies, etc. I was told that if it's a bike it has to go in a box and that there would be a $50 surcharge over and above the regular $26 checked baggage fee, going each direction.
If I fly again, I'll be going with WestJet. My trip was booked on short notice and I was stuck with choosing Air Canada.

I have a Tern Verge X30h that fits into a Samsonite suitcase that is under the 62" size and under the weight limit. Looks just like regular luggage. I have flown within Canada with AC, to Europe with AC and Air Transat as well. So far no fees or fees from the airlines but it has been inspected by airport security.
So far no issues and it's great having my own bike when traveling.....
