Very nice - and thank you for the information.

BTW - do you have an opinion of the freewheel vs. coaster brake hub? Drag, weight, ease of installation, use?

Schlumpf also has that 2 speed crank and makes his own Belt Cogwheels ..

Not automatic , but easy to shift with a tap of the center button with your heel, 1:1 and 1:1.65..overdrive..

they would work with either a Freewheel or Fixed rear Hub.

I see a 22t freewheel listed https://www.gatescarbondrive.com/Products/CDXSPROCKETS.

I cannot find you bike (as pictured) again. I saw it the other day, but have looked at thousands of posts and pictures since. Would you post it again? Also, what are your gear ratios (teeth up front and back too)?

My Bike Friday (20" wheels ) has a Rohloff hub rear hub cog is a 16, front a 53. that is the 11th speed in the gear sequence ..

the Schlumpf MD is in my Brompton 3 speed MD Its a 15: 54t, ('21.6' in low range) I only have a NDS Picture .

my 1st Rohloff Bike has 26" wheels it only needs a 38t chainring to be about the same gear range .. same 16t cog

16 is the easiest spare to get thru QBP..

I used the https://cyclofiend.com/ site to post the Koga and Brompton [no one has added to it since 010.]

Back to belt drive..
22x3 ,, a 66t belt ring 3x 20 is a 60" gear

I only see 55 60 and 70 t on the CDX page ... [or smaller . 39, 42, 46]

2.5x, 2.727x, 3.1818x

63.63636363636 is an interesting infinite repeating decimal ..

My new Brompton S2 project is a two speed, but I just couldn't do single with the hills we have around here. The S2's speeds are basically the same as my Hooli 3's 2nd and 3rd gears,so I figure once I get it down to the target weight of under 20lbs,it'll be fine. Tried a SS once(Surly 1x1),and while the simplicity was nice, having only one choice for both up and down hill just didn't work for me.

I like the German coaster brake hubs a lot.. I have the 2, 3, and 5 speed SRAM or Sachs currently on my favorite bikes .. I don't notice drag at all while pedaling, as these are very efficient hubs... my coaster brake bikes all have front caliper or v-brakes.. I use the coaster as a 'speed reducer' or 'drag brake' and the front for actually stopping the bike.. 2 or 3 speed IGH don't feel that heavy to me..

Some can't get on with the idea of a coaster brake, I happen to like them.. no rim wear, reasonable slowing power, basically maintenance free, no extra caliper or v-brake arms/cabling/or brake lever for the rear .. can't see much of a weight penalty of the brake arm and internal brake parts over the alternative of conventional rear brakes..

Definitely not a fan of the S2C SA kickback hub.. if you want a 2 speed kickback coaster, look for a vintage Sachs Duomatic ... another well built hub..

Any time I've thought I would ride a single speed, it has always managed to grow gears somehow...

I gave up on no gears a while back. Even my lockup commuter, which would have been OK as a SS, is now a 2sp w/ coaster brake.

My brother had a SS, but requested gears, so I converted it to 3sp.

A used Jamis Sputnik SS/FG bike just landed in my realm and I have it up and running as a FG bike. I wonder how long that will last...

Probably hours of research and questions to arrive at the same conclusion!

Rode a Pocket Companion OSATA with 8 speed today and liked it. Almost as simple as I was thinking at first. So, for the moment it is down to:

Pocket Companion OSATA 8 - $610
Used Llama 24/disc brake - $950 (if the frame fits me)
NWT with Alfine 8/Gates belt, discs - ~ $1,750

I know this last one totally blows what I've been looking for, but I can get a pretty hefty discount off new and boy is that setup tempting.

Opinions anyone?

46 t CDX sprocket, on a Speed Drive crank, will act like a 76t

with the 22t freewheel 1 gear will be 2.09:1, the other 3.45:1 (gear 1 x 1.65)

20" wheel .. 40.8gi ; 69gi

a pretty simple 2 speed .. though the Swiss-German Made planetary crank is a bit spendy ..

they went down a bit moving production out of the CHF to the Euro zone.

Over time, I've been convinced that belt drive is a big plus for commuter/utility/touring bikes ... non performance bikes. Personally, if I was committed to getting an IGH, I'd go with belt drive. I don't know enough about belt drive to say much about how they would pack and hold up during travel.

I love the simplicity too, but what I am finding is due to the large rear cog (no small cogs available because the belt cannot grasp small cogs) it limits how you can use it on a bike with smaller wheels.

If you want higher gears and belt drive, it might be worth it to pony up the extra bucks for the Alfine 11. Otherwise, you can go "old school" with a chain.

BTW during my search for a new folder I ran across a Dahon MU XL with front dyno hub and rear Nexus 8 for a good price ($350).
